Voluntary Water Restrictions Initiated
The City has initiated Stage One of its Drought Contingency Plan as the Guadalupe River flow is well below its normal level for this time of year.
Under Stage One of the plan, citizens are asked to voluntarily reduce the use of water for non-essential purposes and to practice water conservation measures to reduce the amount of water they are consuming.

Water conservation practices include such measures as:
- Water the lawn only when it is necessary. Learn to know when grass needs watering. If it has turned a dull gray-green or if footprints remain visible, it is time to water.
- Use a sprinkler that produces large drops of water, rather than a fine mist, to avoid evaporation.
- To avoid evaporation, turn soaker hoses so the holes are on the bottom.
- Water slowly for better absorption and never water on windy days.
- Avoid watering the street, sidewalks or driveways.
- Do not water too frequently. Too much water can overload the soil so that air cannot get to the roots and can encourage plant diseases.
- Do not over-water. Soil can absorb only so much moisture and the rest simply runs off. A timer will help, and either a kitchen timer or an alarm clock will do. An inch of water, applied once a week, will keep most Texas grasses alive and healthy.
- Raise the cutting height on your lawnmower. The longer blades of grass will provide shade for the root system and make the turf more drought resistant.
The City will remain in Stage I of its Drought Contingency Plan until the flow in the Guadalupe River rises to a normal level for 14 consecutive days or until the river level falls to its minimum level for this time of the year, at which time the City would enter Stage 2 of its Drought Contingency Plan.

Ozone Action Days | |
The warm temperatures of the Texas summer bring the threat of Ozone Action Days, when ground-level ozone can reach concentrations high enough to endanger human health, the staff of Air Victoria recently warned.
Ground-level ozone is produced when air and car exhaust chemically combine due to hot temperatures. In Victoria, the season for Ozone Action Days runs from May to October.
"Certain people are at a higher risk for ozone-related health problems," said Marie Lester, environmental programs coordinator for the City of Victoria and Air Victoria. "They need to stay informed and stay inside as much as possible when we issue an Ozone Action Day alert."
Children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions like asthma all fall into this higher risk category. Everyone should consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities, such as running or yard work, until after 5 pm on Ozone Action Days to protect their health.
Local residents should also refrain from refueling vehicles before 5 p.m., and wait until after sundown or until the next day to do yard work.
To help reduce ground-level ozone, local residents should:
- Stop at the click when refueling
- Carpool and combine errands whenever possible
- Refrain from idling their vehicles when picking up children or waiting in drive-thru lanes.
Victoria residents can sign up for free e-mail alerts at airvictoria.org/ozone, where they can also learn more about how to help prevent ground-level ozone.
For more information, contact Marie Lester at 361-485-3230.

Floodplain Maps Approved
According to City of Victoria Floodplain Administrator John Johnston, final revised floodplain maps are now in effect. The maps were released by FEMA on March 9, 2012 for the floodplain map boundaries associated with Lone Tree Creek from John Stockbauer Drive to the Houston Highway.
The Lone Tree Creek Channel Improvement and Detention Facility Project was funded through a bond issue in 2000 and completed in 2009. This project consisted of improving the drainage channel from John Stockbauer Drive to Airline Road as well as the construction of the detention facility located between Airline Road and Houston Highway. Drainage improvements to Lone Tree Creek reduced the width of the floodplain, floodway and lowered the base flood elevation along Lone Tree Creek. About 400 homes along Lone Tree Creek will be removed from the floodplain.
If you would like to view the revised maps, please visit www.victoriatx.org, click on the Development Services link and then click on the Flood Plain Management Information link.
