In Touch - January 2012 City of Victoria, Texas |

| |
Zhayvan Gayle (pictured above), a seven-year-old first grade student at Shields Magnet Elementary School, was presented with the first-issued recycling cart for the City of Victoria's Curbside Recycling Program, which begins on February 6, 2012. Zhayvan also received a framed certificate. His enthusiasm for recycling and saving the Earth caught the attention of city officials when he attended a City Council meeting last March to show his support for the curbside recycling program. Zhayvan's mother, Jessica Taylor, said her son is passionate about taking care of the environment and helped start a recycling program in both his household and his neighborhood. Zhayvan was presented with the cart and certificate at his school on Tuesday, January 3. District 1 City Council Member Denise Rangel made the presentation along with Darryl Lesak, Marie Lester and Kate Garcia of the City's Environmental Services Department. |

Fireproof Your Home This Winter | |
The high cost of heating fuels and utilities have caused many Americans to search for alternate sources of home heating during the winter months. The use of woodburning stoves is growing and space heaters are selling rapidly. Fireplaces are burning wood and man-made logs.
All of these heating methods are a major contributing factor in residential fires. The following safety tips can help you maintain a fire safe home this year:
- Make sure wood stoves are properly installed away from combustible surfaces, have good floor supports and have proper ventilation so that the smoke can exit the home safely. Never use flammable liquids (such as gasoline) to start a fire or keep one going.
- Make sure your space heaters have an emergency shut-off valve in case they tip over. ONLY use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. Never refill a space heater when it is still on or still hot. Refuel heaters outside, away from the house.
- Have your furnace and chimney professionally inspected every year and cleaned, if necessary. Chimney tar build-up is a common cause of chimney fires.
- Use a glass or metal screen in front of your fireplace to stop sparks from setting nearby carpets or furniture on fire.
- Never thaw frozen pipes with a blow torch or other open flame. Use hot water or a laboratory tested device, such as a hair dryer.
- Dispose of hot ashes in covered metal containers and place containers away from the house.
- Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.
- Protect yourself and your family by having a working smoke alarm. A smoke alarm greatly reduces your chances of dying in a fire.
- Develop and practice a home fire escape plan and set a meeting place outside. Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two (2) escape routes from their bedrooms. |
