COLUMBUS, Ohio -
When fourth-grader Kadayah Keys casually stops by the store at Harambee Christian School here to buy a granola bar for her mid-morning snack, a lot more goes on than a simple commercial transaction.
Kadayah pays for her granola bar not with cash, nor even with an old-fashioned debit card. Instead, she quickly enters her st
udent ID-and the transaction is cashless, cardless, and paperless. But she's not being taught some bad habits as a consumer: Kadayah, instead of charging a purchase to be paid back later, is simply deducting the cost of the bar from credit she has previously built up in a school account. Within the hour, she'll be checking the status of her account.

Harambee Spotlight - John Thesing
Age: 22
Major/Occupation: Math - soon to be High School Math Teacher!
In this month's Voice of Concern, we'd like you to meet John. For the past two school years John has spent time each week working with a wide variety of ages at Harambee in the After School Program. In addition to working with students, John also volunteers as a tutor for Parent University, helping individuals prepare for their GED.
When asked about why he first got involved with Urban Concern, Jon said, "I saw that there was a big need for the kids at Harambee Christian School. I also know that God places a great emphasis on ministering to the poor and those who are not as privileged, and I wanted to get involved with the work that God was doing in South Linden."
"I have grown in my understanding of God's free gift of forgiveness for all that receive him. I have also benefited from seeing God grow my heart for the kids in the school. Only after I made a commitment to serve did I see how enjoyable it is to work with the kids. Most importantly, I understand more of what it means to be 'like a child' when approaching God. (Mark 10:15)"
For those thinking about getting involved, Jon reminds us of our calling:
"God calls us to love others like our neighbor, and I feel unbelievably blessed that he has considered me worthy to serve in this way. I would urge those that are considering getting involved to take a step of faith and believe what God says in John 13:17, 'If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.'"
Thanks for all you do, John!
