The case for year-round school

Why Harambee students are already 1 week into the school year

While most students are still biding their time before heading back to school, students at Harambee Christian School have already completed their first week of classes, homework, and the After School Program.

Research shows that Summer months contribute strongly to the significant discrepancy between low-income and high-income students.

As stated in Time, "Test scores show that all students' learning skills improve at similar rates during the school year, but higher-income kids keep up the pace during the summer while lower-income kids plateau or lose ground. The problem compounds over time and plays a huge role in overall achievement gaps" (Von Drehle, David. The Case Against Summer Vacation, August 2010).

Likewise, the same report shows that, "Students from disadvantaged backgrounds at the end of grade school score what their more advantaged classmates did almost two years earlier [...] By ninth grade, summer learning loss could be blamed for roughly two-thirds of the achievement gap separating income groups."

Moving to year-round school will enable Urban Concern to better empower students to succeed academically, personally, and spiritually.

Harambee opened its doors for the 2011-12 school year on July 25th, successfully transitioning to our first year on a year-round school calender.  120 students are enrolled in grades K-7.

Harambee Christian School operates through the help of generous supporters like you.   Consider making a pledge of your time or treasure to empower students and families in South Linden to become agents of positive chance.

Harambee Spotlight

Harambee welcomes 6th and 7th grade Language Arts.

Please join us in welcoming Keenan Meadows as the
new 6th and 7th grade Language Arts teacher at Harambee!

Mr. Meadows with some of the first Harambee 7th graders

Before starting at Harambee, Keenan worked at an innercity charter school on Columbus' east side.  Noticing the
dominance of gang life and drug use in the lives  his students, Keenan was compelled to share more than just language arts with his students:

"There was always this feeling that being an invested teacher wasn't good enough; I felt that I couldn't truly make a difference unless I shared the hope that comes from knowing Jesus with my students -- something that is forbidden in the public school system -- and even more so that if only these students knew Christ in a radical way could they really be given a new, amazing life."

After receiving his bachelor's degree from Ohio State, Keenan began substitute teaching when God made his calling clear:  "During the first day, the first class even, I had this moment that teachers call the "teachable moment" where I had the opportunity to help a young man find success on his own.  The feeling that came from that was pretty overwhelming.  I felt this was a career that could really make a difference for both society at large and for God."  He went on to get his teaching license from Ohio Dominican over the next two years.

As the new 6th & 7th grade Language Arts instructor at Harambee, Keenan is excited to pursue this calling.  When asked about the qualities and skills Keenan values as most important to pass on to his students, he says:

"As a language arts educator I have to say that I hold reading comprehension, writing skills, and effective communication at the top of my list.  I believe that the skills I teach are truly essential for succeeding in the workplace and the education they will receive after Harambee.  That being said, teachers play a role where content is far from the only thing we pass on to our students.  I strive hard to instill values that will help my students become contributing members of society such as working as a team, pursuing excellence no matter what, and above all, respecting one another, ourselves, and our community."

     Welcome aboard, Mr. Meadows!
