As the country and our community continue to navigate through recession, students at Harambee Christian School are hard at work; They are running their own business!

Students recently launched the Harambee Coffee Club. Now you can get our delicious custom Sankofa blend coffee from Ethiopia every month!

Saving lives through mosquito nets

Notice the student sneaking popcorn at the yellow table!

Last Friday, Harambee kindergartners conducted a popcorn and flavored ice sale after spending a week learning about economics
to raise money to help children in Africa who need mosquito nets.

$120.00 was raised in all, which will go to purchasing 12 mosquito nets for children in need.

Volunteer Spotlight
Maggie Apel

Name
: Maggie Apel
Age: 20
Occupation: Scheduler at Exel Direct

This month, we are excited to introduce a very dedicated volunteer, who spends most days of the week helping out our 6th graders in the After School Program at the Middle School Study Table.  In Maggie's own words:

I wanted to volunteer with Urban Concern, because I grew up in a privileged neighborhood and was afforded every opportunity in life, and I believe that Harambee is doing that for these kids. I want to support anything that tells students that they can do what ever they want. It's true!  I think that if we, as volunteers, believe it (and I do very much so) they will feel it and begin to believe it themselves.

They teach me something new everyday from how to clearly communicate my point to how to do a Beyblade Battle (not the same as when I was a kid). Also, I learn a new aspect of God's grace every time I am with them. It's pretty sweet.

Advice I would give to anyone considering volunteering with Urban Concern - be careful: Harambee and the ASP are like potato chips - you can't have just one. You'll fall in love. I can't wait to see the students everyday!
