Parenting with Love & Logic
New parenting classes offer another option for parents.

For the past seven weeks, nine South Linden parents met on Wednesday nights to learn a new approach to parenting.

"We need to put the love and fun back into parenting", said Danielle McKnight-Zellner,
class facilitator and Administrative Assistant at Harambee Christian School. "We always hear about the negative things our kids are doing, and we respond to these negative things in a negative way." Using a curriculum called Parenting With Love & Logic, Danielle led exercises and discussions geared towards teaching parents an approach that offers shared control over decision making between parents and their children.

"It is challenging to admit that there is another way to parent than what you're used to," said Danielle, "But we were all open and willing to learn how to better love our children."

When asked about the class, parents described it in one word: "Awesome."  "Immediately we were able to take what we had learned and bring it into our homes with us," said Danielle.

Name:
Byron Tobe
Age:
27
Occupation:
IT Help Desk Manager

As a former student involved with Urban Concern's programs, Byron now spends his Tuesdays volunteering in our After School Program, in addition to leading Bible studies in the OSU campus area for high school aged students.

When asked how being a part of Urban Concern impacted his life, Byron said, "It had a huge impact on my life! Urban Concern gave me opportunities I would have never had.  The programs gave me a completely different perspective on life, which helped me make better decisions for myself in a very broken world. It's amazing to look back and see where my life is today, because of the relationships that followed me through adulthood. I am blessed to say that I have friendships that will last a lifetime and it's all through Urban Concern."

In addition to working as an IT manager, Byron is also a husband and father. When asked about what motivates him to volunteer where he grew up, he said, "
It's the kids. I want to have an impact on their lives, just as the staff and volunteers at Urban Concern had on my life. I want the kids to have as much support as possible, and I hope that me being there helps, even if it's just a little."

"Sharing your experiences can help to inspire; these are things that made a difference in my life, and this is what I hope to give back."
