"The Tax Man Cometh"
It's
tax time and the South Linden community is once again inundated with people
offering "quick loan" tax services.
These services are often expensive and not financially wise choices.
For
the past two years, the Family & Community Development department at Urban
Concern has offered an alternative, thanks to Brent Johnson of Yankovich, Adelman, Johnson and Stevenson. Brent has helped 12 families so far this year get their
taxes prepared for free which means these families get to keep more of
their hard-earned money; helping them as well as the local economy. Brent volunteers his time and talent to those
less fortunate and our families benefit by receiving electronic filing (while
they wait), tax dispute resolution and direct deposit of their income tax refunds, often within two weeks of completion.
Free tax preparation for parents is one of the services offered by Urban Concern's Family & Community Development Department, led by Mike Watson. His goal is to serve each individual involved in UC programs and the school in a holistic way.
Besides tax preparation, Mike is a trained Benefit Bank Counselor enabling him to link individuals with Food Stamps, HEAP and other benefits. Urban Concern is also a referral agency for the Material Assistance Program (MAP).
Family Fun Events such as movie nights, family skating and picnics help families build relationships and connect with each other for support.
Feel free to contact Mike Watson at (614) 291-0885 or email him at watsonm@urbanconcern.org If you have any questions about Family & Community Development activities at Urban Concern.
