Summer Elementary Enrichment Program Addresses "Learning Loss"
Many studies have shown that regardless of other activities offered by nonprofit agencies during the summer, "the best predictor of summer (educational) loss or summer gain is whether or not a child reads during the summer" (McGill-Franzen and Allington Study, 2003). Teachers spend on average four to six weeks in the fall helping students re-learn the material from the previous year.
This is part of the motivation behind Urban Concern's Summer Elementary Enrichment Program. UC has invested substantial resources this summer to provide an eight-week education program to keep 44 students in grades one through six engaged in learning over the summer. The curriculum is designed to advance students one month ahead in math and reading from the end of the school year.
Pre- and post-tests are used with attendance records to measure each student's progress toward personal learning goals.
Of course there are fun activities during the program and a nutritious breakfast and lunch is provided for every student as well. To learn more, please contact Wakeshia Harris, Program Director at (614) 291-0885 x 190 or email HarrisW@xenos.org.
