Linden Residents March for Peace in their Community
March against Violence Draws Big Crowd Saturday

aliahMore than 200 people attended the Greater Linden March against Violence, hosted by Urban Concern on Saturday May 30th.  The march focused awareness on the importance of using positive means to resolve conflict in the community.

The march kicked off at St. Stephen's Community House on 17th Avenue and went south on Cleveland Avenue to the Harambee Community Center at Bonham Avenue where there was a post-march rally, food and booths highlighting community service organizations.

Marchers chanted "We want peace, on our streets!" as they walked through the Linden community.  Many onlookers cheered in support.aliah

Urban Concern's Spiritual Development Director, Mr. James Brown, addressed the crowd at the rally afterwards reminding people to "love their neighbor as themselves."  The mothers of two young men who died from gun violence joined him.

Urban Concern would like to thank Akzo Nobel Coatings, the Greater Linden Development Corporation, Johnson's Real Ice Cream, Gracehaven, Air Waves, Oyango Snell Esq. & the South Linden Area Commission for their generous support of this event.  We also want to thank the following community service organizations for their participation & important work in the community:  CHOICES, Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, Communitiy Circle 13, Directions for Youth & Families, Narcotics Anonymous, Project Linden Inc, and the Greater Linden Advisory Council.

Harambee Fifth Grade Graduation Ceremony this Friday:
All Invited!

aliahThis Friday, June 5th, fifteen fifth graders will graduate from Harambee Christian School (HCS).  Everyone is invited to attend the celebration, which starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Harambee Community Center, 1000 Bonham Avenue.

The is the second class to graduate from the new Center and the sixth graduating class from HCS.

Twelve of the fifteen students enrolled at the school in kindergarten, and three will continue their education at Calumet Christian School.  The other twelve students will attend the KIPP Journey Academy, a tuition-free college-preparatory school that serves under-resourced communities throughout the United States. KIPP opened a school in Linden in 2008.

We are excited about these students' success and for their hard work at Harambee.
They accomplished great things during their elementary years including achievement in the 71st percentile in Math and the 75th percentile in Language on the most recent MAP Assessment.
