| The City of Urbana - Making Improvements to City Streets |
The City of Urbana currently has three major street reconstruction projects underway to ultimately make traveling smoother in the City - Windsor Road from Boulder Drive to High Cross Road; Goodwin Avenue from Gregory Drive to Springfield Avenue; and Green Street from Vine Street to Cottage Grove Avenue. Windsor Road is being widened from two to four and five lanes with a raised median, concrete curbs and gutters, and roadway lighting. A new traffic signal will be installed at the Myra Ridge Drive and Windsor Road intersection. The project also includes the reconstruction of a multi-use path along the entire north side of the project. Additionally, a new sidewalk will be installed on the south side of the road from Myra Ridge Drive to Susan Stone Drive. Increased capacity on Windsor Road is necessary to safely accommodate current and future economic growth and development in southeast Urbana. Several new businesses such as Meijer, Monical's Pizza, Busey Bank, Subway, Milo's Restaurant and two health clinics, Carle Clinic and Christie Clinic, have recently opened adjacent to Windsor Road. This $6.2 million project is a multi-year construction project with completion anticipated in November of 2010. Two-way traffic is being maintained during the construction and the project is currently on schedule. The Goodwin Avenue project is a pedestrian and bicycle safety improvement project on the campus of the University of Illinois. The City received a $900,000 Highway Safety Improvement Program grant for this project. Goodwin Avenue will be a "complete street" at the completion of the project. A complete street accommodates various modes of transportation - including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, and vehicles - all within the same right-of-way. The proposed improvements include: milling and resurfacing; re-striping the pavement to narrow the driving and parking lanes; striping on-street bike lanes; constructing bump-outs at intersections to shorten pedestrian crossing distances; striping all crosswalks with high-visibility markings; erecting improved pedestrian and bicycle warning signage; installing new street lighting; consolidating bus stops and constructing enhanced bus stops; and constructing traffic signal upgrades and making geometric improvements at the intersection of Goodwin Avenue & Springfield Avenue. This project is currently on schedule for completion in late November of this year. Reconstruction of Green Street east of Vine Street recently began in early September. This $750,000 project involves milling and resurfacing, raising the pavement, and constructing new curb and gutter and driveway approaches. In addition, the existing brick sidewalk on the north side of the corridor will be removed and replaced with a new 5 feet wide concrete sidewalk to connect Downtown Urbana to Victory Park. The existing brick sidewalk along the south side of the corridor will be preserved and repaired, as necessary. To minimize the length of construction, the project is being constructed in 3 stages, with portions of the street being closed to through traffic during each stage. Currently, Green Street is closed between Anderson Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. It is anticipated that the street reconstruction will be complete in late fall of this year with the sidewalk and landscaping work to be complete in the spring of 2010. The City of Urbana apologizes for any inconvenience these projects have caused residents. However, when the projects are complete, the corridors will be much better for all users. For more information about these projects and other projects happening around the City, see the City's website at: http://www.city.urbana.il.usURL=/urbana/public_works/pw_projects/main.html |
