Second Saturday Success Stories |
Edith Peacock of H2O Salon & Spa says:
"On our 3rd Second Saturday we decided to offered free eyebrow waxing so we could increase the foot traffic at H2O. The response was overwhelming! A couple people, after getting their eyebrows wax decided to get their hair cut. Clients that had not been here for a year or so made appointments and came back for their services, and people that had been thinking about coming to H2O decided that day that it was time to do so.That previous week we were a little slow that Saturday made up for it , since it was first come first serve we had clients waiting at the door before we open and at times we had lines waiting for their turn. Way to go Second Saturday! Keep up the good work UBA!"

City of Urbana - Market at the Square Updates |
Battery recycling lives on in Urbana, but with new regulations. Per the US Department of Transportation, all battery terminals must be taped at both ends with Scotch tape prior to drop-off. We will accept taped terminals at the City tent starting this weekend.
Don't forget - the Market has added 40 additional spaces for Bike parking along Walnut Street, adjacent to the Market. If you ride your bike to the Market, feel free to lock up to one of these racks or any of the racks surrounding the Market area. People frequently ask about dogs and other animals at the Market, so here's the lowdown: If you're a dog owner who likes bringing your dog to the Market, please stop by the City tent to pick up a copy of our policy on animals at the Market. The long version of the policy will be available on the web as soon as possible, but the short version tells you almost everything you need to know. In short, dogs and other animals are welcome, but must be a) well-socialized and b) cleaned up after by their owners. We'll also be handing the policy out to people we see with animals at the Market, so we might catch you first.
Thanks very much for your cooperation. The City of Urbana is committed to making Market at the Square an environment that is safe, healthy, and pleasant for everyone. As the Market is a City-sponsored event and is on City property, smoking is not allowed within the perimeter of the Market. |
The Urbana Free Library - "Working to get people excited about reading" |
Taken from an article on the217.com titled: "The Urbana Free Library works to get people excited about reading"
Are you looking for something new to do with your kids this summer? If so, the Urbana Free Library is looking for people with whom they can "get wild."
Working in collaboration with the Illinois Library Association and their iRead summer program, "Read on the Wild Side," the Urbana Free Library is hosting a number of events to get both kids and parents excited about reading. Barb Lintner, the director of children services at the Urbana Free Library, said annual programs like these are important in developing reading skills in children during their time off from school.
The Urbana Free Library is also hosting various events at the library as well. This week on Thursday, July 16, the library is hosting "Wild About Books Brown Bag Lunch" from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event is for those reading at a fourth grade level or higher. Children are invited to bring in a favorite book to share as well as a lunch. There will be activities and reading aloud. Also on Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m., the library will host a program entitled "Wild about Illinois." This activity will introduce children in kindergarten through fifth grade to the plants and animals native to Illinois in a very hands-on way. Lintner said it's programs like these that get kids into the library, build a sense of family and also a stronger sense of community in Urbana.
