Tip of the Month
Return to Sender: Email Responses

Increasingly, inter-organizational communication happens through email. While this can be an efficient means of communication, email can also breed conflict, confusion, and in the case of mail glut, overload and burnout. To avoid such pitfalls when responding to emails, consider the following tips:

Change the Subject: When replying to an email, only keep the 're:' subject if it is still relevant. Otherwise, create a new, concise, subject with key words that will make it easy to refer to in an inbox or by search.

One Topic per Message:
Avoid writing emails with strings of information on various subjects. If you are replying to an email with many points, think about doing so in separate emails, with a relevant subject for each. Though this may seem unwieldy, it allows all topics to be attended to, and to be deleted as they are addressed.

Keep it Simple:
When using 'reply all', keep only the recipients for whom the information is relevant. This applies especially if you are dealing with a personal topic.

Personal Privacy:
There is almost no situation where criticisms and arguments should be sent to a group. Best practice is to move emotionally-charged topics to phone or in person.
Urbana Park District - Strawberry Jam & Wild About Parks
Strawberry Jam

On Saturday, June 13, pack a picnic dinner, head to Meadowbrook Park, and celebrate the beginning of summer the old-fashioned way: with live and local folk music, a sunset stroll through the prairie, a hayrack ride along a creek and the sweet taste of strawberries over vanilla ice cream (while supplies last). Don't for get a blanket or lawn chairs.

4-5pm Grass Roots Revival (Bluegrass)
5:30-6:30pm Exorna (Irish Folk Music)
7-8:30pm Corn Dessert Ramblers (Bluegrass)

While you are there, join the hunt! Step out and explore the local and natural history of Urbana parks as you search for 30 letterboxes hidden in parks and facilities throughout Urbana. Each letterbox contains a specific stamp that you use to record your "find" in your personal "Wild About Parks Journal". The first 10 letterbox clues will be revealed during the event. Another 10 clues will be revealed in October and the final 10 will be provided in March, 2010. Earn prizes for finding 10, 20 or 30 letterboxes.
City of Urbana - House Unveiling Workshop, Call for Volunteers
House Unveiling

The City of Urbana's Historic Preservation Commission is hosting a "house unveiling" workshop. The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 303 W. High Street. In the tradition of a barn raising, volunteers will be removing (unveiling) the non-original siding from a circa 1902 Queen Anne house. (Rain date, June 20th)

The day-long event will include:
- 8:30 AM to 3 PM Unveiling
- 10 AM Removing Non-Original Siding, will include "why" and "how to" remove non-original exterior siding
- 3 PM Paint It Right, an affordable house painting workshop will teach you how to get a - 12 to 15 year, cost effective paint job for your historic house.
(Both seminars will be led by Bob Yapp, author and host of the former national PBS series, "About Your House with Bob Yapp.")

We are looking for volunteers to help with the following:
- The Unveiling-Volunteers to help remove the aluminum siding will need to arrive no later than 8:30 AM for a safety primer. (Not all volunteers would need to climb ladders or do difficult work-some could assist those doing the actual siding removal.) Volunteers will learn valuable historic preservation skills from a skilled preservationist. All volunteers must wear appropriate clothing.
- Organizing-We are trying to create a "Preservation Block Party" and could use volunteers to help with organizing the events, hosting activities for children, etc.
- Food & Drink-The volunteers are going to be hungry & thirsty, and the public is always interested in home-baked goodies. We could use volunteers to make/bring snacks and/or drinks for the big day.

To volunteer, contact Rebecca Bird at the City of Urbana,
(217) 384-2440, or by email at rlbird@city.urbana.il.us

C-U Mass Transit District - Benefits of Active Transportation
Active Transportation
In April the community hosted a visit by Mark Fenton who is a nationally recognized expert on active transportation.  What is active transportation?  It is transportation that involves physical activity such as walking, biking, or taking transit.
Mr. Fenton, host of the PBS series America's Walking and a representative with the Partnership for a Walkable America, conducted a workshop and two public presentations in Urbana and Champaign.
His Community Leadership Breakfast presentation outlined the benefits to our community of becoming more walkable and bicycle friendly and provided "next step" recommendations for how to achieve our goals.  A summary of his comments and recommendations follows.

The bad news in three numbers is:
30 minutes of daily physical activity is recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General
25% of American adults meet the Surgeon General's recommendation
365,000 estimated deaths per year due to physical inactivity and poor nutrition (second only to tobacco)

The good news is:
You can meet the U.S. guidelines for physical activity www.health.gov/paguidelines by living in a community that supports active living
.

4 elements of a healthier community environment:

Destinations are within walking, biking, and transit distance.
Sidewalks, trails, bike lanes, and crossings are provided.
Settings are inviting for walking, biking and transit.
Walking, biking and transit are safe and accessible for everyone.
We hope you enjoyed this issue of the newsletter and look forward to hearing your feedback. Check our classifieds section below where you can find wonderful opportunites for everyone to take advantage of!

C4A
The Community Center for the Arts (C4A) is ready to expand!

Our requirements are:
· A large performance/rehearsal area (must be large enough to hold 50+ musicians for rehearsals; 40 x 40 is a good starting place)
· Room for 2-3 medium-sized meeting rooms
· Space for 10-12 private teaching studios

We are willing to renovate the right space, so it does not need to be set up exactly like this--we just need room to grow!
If you are aware of a space that might have potential, please e-mail:
