| Greetings! |
|
Welcome to another issue of the UBA newsletter!
We have some exciting events to highlight this month; so many, in fact, that we will be sending out a separate special events newsletter later this week!
This month's networking event will be a unique opportunity; not the typical Wednesday event! OJC Technologies will be celebrating their 11th anniversary, and in honor of that, we are throwing a Downtown House-Party! Several of our outstanding galleries will be open, and all are welcome to join in the festivities.
The 7th Annual Boneyard Arts Festival is coming up on April 16-19! This annual four-day event will showcase the broad range of creative activity flourishing in our community. Check out the website for more information: http://www.40north.org/events/festival.html
If you take a look to your right, you will notice the green Shop Local logo. The Urbana Business Association in partnership with the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, the Mahomet, Rantoul and St. Joseph Chambers of Commerce are excited to announce a united effort to encourage cash flow in our county through our Save Jobs. Shop Local. Spend Now. campaign. You can read more about this initiative in this issue.
Happy Reading,
Susan |

| Tip of the Month |
| Plan Your Week in 30 Minutes
Experts say that you need only 30 minutes plan your entire week. Follow the OATS formula.
O: Objectives
What results do you want to see by the end of the week? Write them down and rank them.
A: Activities
What do you have to do to achieve your goals? List the necessary activities, and put them in sequence.
T: Time
How much time will each activity require? To plan realistically, allow yourself more time than you thimk you will actually need in case unexpected problems occur.
S: Schedule
Look at your calendar and decide when you can do each activity. You won't get anything accomplished if you don't schedule time to do it. | |

| Save Jobs. Shop Local. Spend Now. |

The Urbana Business Association in partnership with the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, the Mahomet, Rantoul and St. Joseph Chambers of Commerce are excited to announce a united effort to encourage cash flow in our county through our Save Jobs. Shop Local. Spend Now. campaign. We are encouraging our residents to understand the consequences for a community when consumers hold back on their spending or they turn to the Internet as a means for saving money.
We are a community blessed with a diverse mix of business and it's that mix that makes our economy work. With this campaign, we are urging our residents to spend their dollars locally; and, to communicate the message that it is all right to invest in yourself, your family, your home and your business. Because when you invest in all these things by making purchases locally, you are investing in public safety and basic services.
When collectively, a community holds back on spending or shops the Internet, our cities have trouble paying our basic services like roads, and fire and police protection. When collectively we hold back, we see businesses that have served our community close their doors and we see people -- our neighbors, our family, our friends lose their jobs. This is not a cycle we can break at the national level, but it is a cycle that we can help break in our local community if we all make a concentrated effort to purchase those extra items or services that we have eliminated from our daily lives - and to certainly not buy them online when possible. |
Urbana Park District Needs Your Help to Make Carle Park's Playground Great
|
The Urbana Park District has collaborated with neighborhood residents for more than a year to design an awesome playground for Carle Park. The most outstanding feature of the Carle Park Playground Committee's design is a very exciting 17-foot tall Web Climber connected by a web bridge to another play structure. The Park District is paying for most of the new play equipment in Carle Park but we need community donations for this Web Climber and bridge to happen.
Please join us to turn this plan into a reality for our children and families! We can raise the money needed if everybody who will enjoy the park contributes as generously as they can.

| City of Urbana - "My First Zip Trip - ZipCar to the Rescue" |
When I arrived at work that morning I was dumbfounded. I discovered that I had a meeting across town in less than 30 minutes and a package to pick up on the way! It was then that I remembered the new ZipCard in my wallet. Two weeks prior I had logged on to www.zipcar.com and applied to become a ZipCar member. I quickly received an email saying that I'd been approved, and a few days later I had received a shiny ZipCard in the mail. That morning I considered the alternatives: the meeting was too far away to walk or bike in time. If I took the MTD I could not pick up my package on the way. No coworkers had a car I could borrow. So I decided my only hope for getting the package and being on time to the meeting was ZipCar. I checked online at www.zipcar.com to see if a car was free and make my reservation. I also checked the basic instructions: my ZipCard would unlock the doors and the keys would be hanging on the dash. Gas, insurance and maintenance were all paid for. All I had to do was drive. I found the car parked right where the online map showed. It was clean and ran smoothly. It was fun to drive and such a nice car. I picked up the package and got to my meeting on time. Saved by ZipCar -- I'm a happy customer. And because of ZipCar, along with the MTD, biking and walking, our family has now decided to downsize to one car. We hope it results in less driving, less pollution, and saving money too.
