Greetings!
The sun is shining, the snow is melting and if you want to see flowers blooming, make sure you stop by Fleurish!

It has been another exciting month for Urbana. I am so proud of the Business Backs the Arts initiative and I hope you all take advantage of this fabulous program. Thank you to UBA board member, Ian Goldberg for bringing this proposal forward.

I personally invite you to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Xinh Xinh Cafe. What a great way to make a first impression and hopefully gain a new customer as well!

Happy Reading,
Susan

tammy sopher braceletThe Urbana Business Association is proud to announce our Business Backs the Arts initiative. This bold new program will allocate $30,000 over three years to provide funding for art in public spaces, specifically as it relates to promoting, developing or otherwise enhancing business. The City of Urbana has studied and established the benefit of art in public spaces, but has been grappling with the best means to fund it.

With this in mind The UBA board devised the Business Backs the Arts program which will provide funding for proposals submitted through the City's Public Arts Commision, which specifically  relate to the business community. Whether through events, installations, showings, or other art programs, it is our hope that these funds will provide opportunities for individuals and organizations to utilize art to promote, inspire, and enhance the business community.

The mission of the Urbana Business Association is to promote Urbana as a dynamic place in which to live, work and do business. We strongly feel that what is good for our community is good for business. By adding this great initiative to our roster of other successful  programs including The Sweetcorn Festival, The Home Parade, The International Beer Tasting and Chili Cook-off, The Indoor Market at Lincoln Square,  Networking events, The Realtors Breakfasts, and the Urbana Business Marketing program, we continue to strive to achieve that mission.

January Ribbon Cuttings
On Wednesday, January 21st, The Morning Cup & More celebrated their opening with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The owners Ron Blakey and Ann Stokr, Mayor Prussing, several City of Urbana staff members and the Urbana Business Associated gathered together. Afterwards, everyone got a taste of the Morning Cup's delicious gelato, which owner Ron deems as "ice cream but better"! The Morning Cup & More is located at 202 North Race in Urbana.

tammy sopher braceletOn Friday, January 23rd, Amano's Pizza, located at 2018 Philo Road in Urbana, celebrated their opening. The owner Ayhan and staff cooked up several tasty "tomato pies" for Mayor Prussing, City of Urbana staff, and other special guests to sample. Stop by or place an order (344-9383) from Amano's and enjoy one of the best pizza's in town.

Downtown Urbana Welcomes Zipcar
Lincoln Square Village is the new home for two Zipcars.  Zipcar is the membership based company that rents cars on an hourly basis.  Members are able to reserve vehicles for their use on-line at $8.00 per hour.  This fee includes all costs associated with operating a motor vehicle (parking, fuel, maintenance, and insurance).  This is a very cost effective solution for those folks who do not own a vehicle or do not have a vehicle at their disposal.  Members simply go to the location selected, use your membership card to unlock the vehicle, drive to your destination(s), and then return the car to the same spot where you originated.

The City of Urbana, City of Champaign, the Mass Transit District, and the University of Illinois have partnered to bring Zipcar to our community.  In total, there are six Zipcars parked locally (two at Lincoln Square Village, two on campus and two in downtown Champaign).  Your Zipcar membership not only gets you access to any of those six cars but to any Zipcar located anywhere including Chicago, Washington, DC, and even London England.

You can join by going to www.zipcar.com/cu.  There is a one time charge of $25.00 to join and an annual fee of $50.00 but if you join before July, 2009 you'll also receive a driving credit of $50.00.

Zipcar is convenient, saves you money, is simple, and provides you with a variety of vehicles to drive, so why not get started today!
