Greetings!

We have several exciting events in March that you should keep in mind:

  • The Mayoral and City Council Candidates will put their best foot forward during an open forum on March 10th as they discuss their platform.
  • The SCORE Round Table, taking place on March 12th, will be an opportunity for anyone with questions about any business need to receive valuable expert advice from SCORE volunteers.
  • The first ever Illinois Marathon is coming up in April and has the potential to bring over 10,000 people to Champaign-Urbana. This is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved in your community as there are numerous volunteer positions available. I am volunteering my time as well, by stuffing packets and assisting with youth registration the day of the event.
  • Believe it or not, the Sweetcorn Festival is right around the corner! It takes place in the heart of downtown Urbana and brings over 50,000 visitors in during the 2 day event.  The festival would not be the event it is today without the help of more than 300 volunteers.  This is your chance to be a part of the biggest festival in the area, and the official cap off to summer. Please contact volunteer@urbanabusiness.com.

Happy Reading,
Susan

Seven Tips to Effective Leadership

Make others feel important:
Emphasize your followers' strengths and weaknesses, not your own.

Promote a vision:
Followers need a clear idea of where you are leading them, and they need to understand why that goes is valuable to them.

Follow the Golden Rule:
An abusive leader attracts few loyal followers.

Admit Mistakes:
If people suspect you are covering up your own errors, they will hide their mistakes too.

Criticize others only in private:
Public praise encourages others to excel, but public criticism only embarrasses and alienates everyone.

Stay close to the action:
Talk to people, visit other offices and work sites, ask questions, and observe how business is being handled.

Make a game of competition:
Set team goals, and reward members who meet or exceed them. Examine your failures, and celebrate your group's successes.

City of Urbana to Increase Amount of Secure Bicycle Parking
The City of Urbana encourages the use of bicycles as a logical alternative to the automobile for access to local amenities.  Providing secure bicycle parking is a necessary part of such use.

There are currently 181 bicycle parking spaces in Downtown Urbana, located at the City Building, Urbana Free Library, Lincoln Square Village, Champaign County Courthouse, and other various locations.

To further enhance bicycle parking in the Downtown area, the City plans to install additional bicycle parking at Lincoln Square Village for the Market at the Square in the spring of 2009.  The City will use a newly developed bicycle parking brochure to ensure proper rack type and placement.  All future bicycle rack installations on City right-of-way will include racks that meet the City's requirements.  As development occurs in the Downtown area, City staff will work with developers to provide secure bicycle parking in accordance with the zoning ordinance and bicycle parking brochure.
Urbana Park District News

The Urbana Park District has put a question on the April 7, 2009 ballot requesting a property tax increase of 15¢ for every $100 dollars of assessed property value. With a tax rate increase, the Urbana Park District can continue to offer a broad range of services to its citizens, contributing to the health, vitality, beauty and economy of the community. Without a rate increase, the district will operate a diminished park, natural areas and recreation system, no longer operating in the way the community has experienced. Services, programs and other offerings must be eliminated to balance the budget. For additional information, visit the Urbana Park District Web site at: http://www.urbanaparks.org/referendum/318.html

Champaign-Urbana MTD Partners Up to Bring Downtown Urbana Two Zipcars
Zipcar, the world's largest provider of cars on demand by the hour or day, has partnered with the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (CUMTD), the cities of Champaign and Urbana, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to bring car sharing to the community as an environmentally-friendly transportation alternative.  Downtown Urbana is home to two Zipcars, a Mazda3 and a Toyota Scion xD, at Lincoln Square. Local residents 21 + can join the service, with gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking included in low hourly and daily rates.  There are also two cars on Wright Street on campus and in downtown Champaign in the public parking lot at Neil and Washington.
The MTD is excited to have helped bring this additional mobility choice to the community as the program is in accord with a continuing mission to lead the way to greater mobility and promote excellence in transportation. With the addition of the Zipcar program, residents have a number of excellent alternatives to get to their destinations. The benefits of having a more balanced transportation system in these areas are less congestion, more available parking, and a safer pedestrian environment.  For the downtowns, it gives residents and employees further flexibility for getting around town.

Zipcar eliminates hundreds of dollars in monthly transportation costs, nationally saving members an average of $600/month or $7,200/year when compared with car ownership - money that can be put toward other more relevant expenses.

Local Champaign and Urbana residents ages 21+ can join for $75 ($25 one-time application fee and $50 annual fee). As a special promotion, local Champaign and Urbana residents will receive $50 in driving credit.  All members 21+ will have access to Zipcar's network of more than 5,500 vehicles throughout the UK and North America.

Those interested in learning more about Zipcar in Urbana can visit www.zipcar.com/cu for more information about membership and hourly rates.
