| Greetings! |
|
This morning, I walked over to welcome The Morning Cup & More at 202 North Race in downtown. I noticed that the owners Ron and Ann have created a cozy atmosphere for dining, coffee and homemade gelato. Ron shared with me that gelato is "ice cream but better". The rum raisin inspired "Malanga" was creamy deliciousness, yum. Stop by and say you read about The Morning Cup & More in the UBA newsletter and get 10% off of your order!
During my walk I thought "Wow, look at all these new businesses that have recently opened or are about to open in downtown!" Here are some recent additions: Beads N Botanicals, on North Broadway, specializes in beading supplies and body care products. We also have Furniture Lounge on Main Street which offers fun, funky, retro furniture and more. 88 Broadway is a unique, dueling piano bar in Lincoln Square. Businesses coming soon include the floral shop, Fluerish on Race, Amara Yoga and the Great Impasta both at Lincoln Square, and the Black Dog Smoke and Ale House on North Broadway. This growth shows me what I have felt for the last 18 months...Downtown Urbana is the place to be! Out my office window I see the activity on Main Street. We have great daytime foot traffic. Lisa Bralts, the new Director of Market at the Square, has taken this community favorite to a new level, proven by the hundreds of people that attend on a weekly basis and then continue on to Main Street to finish their Saturday afternoon. Parking is a dream. There are multiple city lots, a parking deck in the heart of downtown, and plenty of on-street parking that is still a quarter.
If you haven't spent a day in downtown Urbana, I invite you to do so! Come have breakfast at the Courier Café, browse the many shops, art galleries, and groceries within a few blocks, grab lunch at La Gourmandise, spend a few hours being pampered at H2O, don't forget to take home some "sweets" for the family from Mirabelle and cap it off with some upscale appetizers at the very approachable Silvercreek Restaurant. Downtown Urbana has something for everyone!
Our goal is to keep you informed on all the exciting happenings in Urbana. We welcome your feedback and please feel free to forward this to everyone on your e-mail list!
Happy New Year, Susan Toalson |

FOCUS GROUP FOR WOMEN
The focus group is for women only. We will be discussing the creation of a new weekly magazine, just for women, to be distributed in the newspaper. We would like the input of our readers and non-readers. This magazine will be aimed at women of all ages, ethnicities and life-styles so we would like all kinds of women to attend the focus group. This is a good chance to tell the powers that be at the newspaper exactly what you want or do not want and how you would like it presented. A free breakfast will be served and there will be door prizes as well.

Five Tips to Bulletproof Your Job Today
Introduce Yourself
You don't need to get your name on a billboard to make yourself known to a company bigwig. Just say your name, assert your connection and share your personal pitch. Follow up withan e-mail or handwritten note as a reminder of your brief meeting and how much you enjoyed it.
Volunteer to Lead
Offering to take the lead shows you have a stomach for risk, the capacity to learn and the desire for accomplishment that other might not possess.
Be Positive
Positive people are easy to work with and negative people are not. Positive people are among the most valuable in the workplace. Choose to be positive. All you have to do is smile!
Be a Mentor
Step up and offer a bit of support that will help the newbies feel a connection. Plant seeds of influence and suuport in your company that will grow and become more valuable to you over time. Keep things informal, meet regularly, keep it professional, and keep up the connection!
Improve Your Networking Skills
Job survival and advancement are about always having a substantial list of professional acquaintances. Those who work in and around your field are most useful, but it is not unusual for an outsider to be the most effective person in your network. Remember, you may be called on being called on to be a resource for them as well!

On Wednesday, Dec. 10th, Allen Strong with Silvercreek hosted the December Networking Event at "Magic Motors." He and Nancy showed over sixty guests around a lovely decorated "museum" of vintage cards, clothing, art and more. The UBA would like to thank them for sharing such a rare collection with members and friends.
Allen Strong is the owner of Silvercreek and Courier Cafe, two of the finest restaurants in the Champaign-Urbana area that offer upscale dining. Also, when you need to get away from the office or home, grab your laptop and head down to either location and experience great food and free wifi.
