DEAN'S MESSAGE

Bruce Eisenstein

Drexel has made history these past few weeks. Standing in the Bossone Lobby, we experienced great excitement as we watched alumnus and astronaut, Chris Ferguson, command the final space shuttle. We had hundreds present at the Final Space Shuttle Launch Party to support Mr. Ferguson. There were the attendees at the summer camps, students, faculty and professional staff that watched in awe as he prepared for the lift-off. The cheers that erupted in the Lobby were full of pride that day. Our community felt inspired once again by a great leader that graduated from the College of Engineering. Mr. Ferguson is a role model for our students and a leader we can all learn from. He exemplifies the Drexel mission of engineering the future and accomplishing our dreams. Dragons, aspire to do the same! We can lead in solving the problems of tomorrow, together.

Dr. Bruce Eisenstein

Shuttle Led by Alum and Astronaut Chris Ferguson Lands Safely

Final Shuttle Launch

Philadelphia native and Drexel mechanical engineering alumnus Chris Ferguson ('84) led space shuttle Atlantis and the STS-135 crew to a safe landing July 21, 2011 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Ferguson, commander of the STS-135, wrapped up the final mission of the space shuttle program with pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim. The crew delivered more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, spare equipment and other supplies in the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module - including 2,677 pounds of food - that will sustain space station operations for the next year. Drexel will be honoring Ferguson and Drexel's other astronauts, Jim Bagian and Paul Richards, for their outstanding accomplishments with an event in the Fall. Drexel Engineering Students Conduct Zero-G Experiments

ZeroG

After testing their self-designed and constructed experiments on-board a gravity-defying aircraft, engineering students and advisor Dr. Jin Kang (MEM) are busy evaluating their data after experiencing weightlessness at NASA Johnson Space Center's Ellington Field in Houston. The students participated in NASA's Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program (RGEFP), which gives teams of undergraduate students from across the nation the opportunity to propose, design, build, fly and evaluate a reduced gravity experiment. The team was selected from more than 70 proposals based on scientific merit and education outreach potential. Read more.

Drexel Students Travel to Thailand to Help Farmers

Thailand Project

A group of Drexel seniors recently returned from Thailand after successfully completing a project to help rice farmers in the small village of Ban Nam Khe in Thailand. Working on the project are senior Mechanical Engineering students RJ Bauer, Maria LaPosta, Kathleen Rizzo and Biomedical Engineering senior Phuong Diep-Lam and Graphic Design senior Kathryn VenVertloh. Dr. James Tangorra, (MEM) and NSF Fellow Alex Moseson advised the team. The team spent two weeks in the field at the end of June designing and building tools to ease the labor of farming on the steep slopes of the Bo Klua region. This project is the culmination of more than a year of work by The Thai Harvest Initiative. Read more.
