DEAN'S MESSAGE
| This month, we pay tribute to our engineers. CoE had the pleasure of hosting our National Engineers Week celebration February 21-25 and it was a time for us to recognize and honor our students, faculty, alumni, industry partners and engineers world-wide for their indispensable contributions to society. Engineering is a timeless profession and always has been crucial to the progress of civilization. Engineers' ingenuity and success have made possible the essential technologies that we depend upon in our lives, and in fact, have opened doors to things we never dreamed possible. We were inspired by the remarks provided by our Engineering Leader of the Year, Norman Augustine. Mr. Augustine reminded us that engineers are society's leaders and innovators. We pave the path for the future. We engineer the future.
Dr. Bruce Eisenstein

Drexel Celebrates National Engineers Week
| |

CoE celebrated National Engineers Week with a series of events February 21-25. The week kicked off with the Egg Drop Competition, which challenged students to create a contraption made of recyclable materials that would protect an egg from the impact of a 31-foot drop down a steel cable and into a barricade. Additional events throughout the week included the Career Fair that was co-hosted with the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC), Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, Alumni Connections and a Drexel Men's Basketball game with the CoEAA. To culminate the week, students, faculty, professional staff, alumni and industry leaders honored 2011 Engineering Leader of the Year, Norman R. Augustine, at the Engineering Leader of the Year Dinner and Awards Ceremony made possible by sponsors. Read more.

| Senior Design Team to Compete in Shell Eco-Marathon Challenge | A senior design team of 11 students led by Drs. Adam Fontecchio (ECE) and Bradley Layton (MEM) will compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon competition for the first time in Houston, Texas, April 14-17. Students are challenged with designing and building a car that can travel the longest distance using the least amount of energy. The team will compete in the Solar Car Category, one of the more challenging categories due to the complexity of building a solar car and the unpredictability of the weather during the competition. Drexel's team will be competing for a grand prize of $50,000. Read More. |
Dr. Jin Kang to Lead Launch of Drexel's First Satellite: DragonSat-1
Dr. Jin Kang (MEM) and more than 40 senior design students will be launching Drexel's first satellite to the International Space Station. DragonSat-1 is a student-built 1kg satellite, the size of a half of a loaf of bread (10cm cubed) that took two-years to build. Selected by NASA to be launched in 2012 into the International Space Station orbit, it will send pictures of the Earth and environmental data to the ground station setup in Drexel University's Amateur Radio Club, on the top floor of Drexel's Main building.
