DEAN'S MESSAGE

Bruce Eisenstein

Welcome back from the break. To start off the quarter, CoE is taking a leadership role in the community around Drexel. In keeping with the University's mission to help our neighbors, we're providing Internet access, training and technology through our Freedom Rings Partnership to communities across Philadelphia. The project was launched on Martin Luther King Day, January 17, and I'm particularly proud to announce that an ECE undergraduate, Brian Dolhansky, developed an iPhone app for the 2011 Martin Luther King Day of Service. The app helped our community find volunteer opportunities in the neighborhood. Our service in the community continues as our MSE department hosts a Philly Materials Science and Engineering Day for local schools. We encourage you to join us for this event and we look forward to 2011 and the great things to come in CoE.

Dr. Bruce Eisenstein

DID YOU KNOW?

41% of Philadelphians do not have access to the internet. Drexel is changing this by providing training and computers as part of the Freedom Rings Partnership. Read more.

Dr. Patricia Gallagher Helps Raise Endangered Whooping Cranes

whoopingcranes

Dr. Patricia Gallagher (CAEE) has taken time off from her teaching duties as professor at Drexel to help raise and train the endangered whooping crane chicks. With a total world population of less than 600, the whooping crane is the most famous critically endangered bird in North America. Operation Migration and the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership are doing their part to save the species by raising the whooping crane chicks for reintroduction to the eastern part of the country. The juvenile cranes are taught the migration route in the fall and return to the nesting grounds unaided the following spring. Dr. Gallagher joined Operation Migration as part of the ground crew to teach the chicks the migrate route from Wisconsin to Florida. Read more.
