DEAN'S MESSAGE

Dean

Energy is everywhere at Drexel.  What better demonstrates this than the quality of our students and faculty?  With their success in the Steel Bridge Competition and the NSF GRFP awards, our students are greatly contributing to science and teaching. Their endless endeavors in research and in the classroom are crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security.  Our faculty and their teams are contributing to the Drexel energy as well - literally! CoE researchers have accomplished doubling the ability to savor energy storage with micro-supercapacitors. As this research advances, we hope to see the use of micro-capacitors used worldwide in electronic mobile devices. We look forward to hearing about the advances in micro-capacitors and within CoE.

Drexel Steel Bridge Team Wins Regional Competition
Steel Bridge Team
The Drexel Architectural Engineering Institute chapter's 2010 Steel Bridge Team qualified for the national competition after placing first at the regional competition, held recently at Penn State University. The team competed in the ASCE and AISC student steel bridge competition against nine other colleges and universities, including Penn State, the University of Delaware and Lafayette College. Drexel's team placed in five of the six possible categories and was first overall in the competition. By placing first, the Drexel Steel Bridge Team moves on to the national competition, to be held at Purdue May 28-29. Drexel will compete against approximately 45 teams at the national event.

Students Receive NSF Fellowships

Congratulations to Drexel's 2010 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) recipients and honorable mentions. The NSF GRFP provides three years of funding and stipends for research-oriented graduate study in the sciences. Drexel's award winners are U.Kei Cheang (MEM), Kevin Freedman (MEM), David Grunberg (ECE) and Robert Sherbert (ECE).  Drexel students receiving honorable mentions are Alyssa Marie Batula (ECE), Jeffrey Dowgala (CAEE),  Amalie Oroho (MSE) and Ben Pelleg (ECE).  For more information on the NSF GRFP fellows, please click here.

Dr. Yury Gogotsi & Team Advance Research in Micro-Supercapacitors

microsupercapacitors
A paper in the April 23, 2010 issue of Science Magazine by  Dr. Yury Gogotsi (MSE) and John Chmiola ('09, MSE) and their collaborators in France, describes a new method of producing high energy storage devices known as supercapacitors. Dr. Gogotsi and Chmiola are addressing the problem of short-lived portable devices by doubling their performance. The paper opens the possibility of integrating high-performance micro-supercapacitors into a variety of electronic devices. For more information on the advances in micro-supercapacitors, please click here.

Senior Design Team Places First in Structural and HVAC Competition
Senior Design Team CAEE
The Architectural Engineering Senior Design team of Jeffrey Dowgala, Lauren McNally, Jackie Bayer and Liam Hendricken achieved great success at the national Architectural Engineering Institute Charles Pankow Foundation Competition. The team received first place in structural engineering and HVAC engineering and second place in building integration for their project "Retrofit of Historic Warehouse to New Medical Clinic in Tulsa, OK."  The team of CAEE seniors is advised by Dr. James E. Mitchell.

CoE Hosts Sea Perch Challenge
seaperchoption4
CoE  hosted the Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge April 24, 2010. The Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge is an underwater robotics competition to test the engineering skills of middle school, high school and community college students. Teams competed in the U.S. Navy-funded competition to win recognition for design excellence, presentation and teamwork. CoE supports the competition to increase interest in robotics, science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
