DEAN'S MESSAGE
We begin our Spring quarter with the return of eager minds ready to take on the Grand Challenges of Engineering. The RePlay Laboratory has a strong start in this arena. Virtual reality is becoming a powerful new tool for training practitioners and treating patients, in addition to its growing use in forms of entertainment. Dr. Fontecchio and his team's NSF Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education Program grant will help connect our PhD students with local high schools to help spread the excitement of engineering. Projects like these are key to society's future success. Drexel's ongoing progress and sense of accomplishment has helped drive the College of Engineering to the top!

Video Game Program Ranked in Princeton Review's Top Three
Drexel University's video game design curriculum has been ranked by the Princeton Review as one of the top three undergraduate programs out of more than 500 schools in the United States and Canada. Gaming at Drexel is an interdisciplinary program through the RePlay Laboratory developed jointly by the CS Department and the Digital Media Program (DIGM) in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Co-directors of the RePlay Lab, Dr. Frank Lee (CS) and Dr. Paul Diefenbach (DIGM), lead the efforts in RePlay. RePlay exposes students to game development through projects that expand gaming beyond traditional interfaces and entertainment applications, enabling students to not just learn video game development, but to live it. The rankings of this accolade will be published in the April 2010 edition of GamePro Magazine.

FIRST: 1,500 High School Students Battle Robots in Breakaway
More than 1,500 high school students from five states competed in the FIRST Regional Robotics Competition March 26-27, 2010 at Drexel. During this year's game, called "Breakaway," two teams made up of three schools raced robots around a 27-foot-by-54-foot field trying to score soccer balls into a goal for points. The robots attempted to dribble soccer balls and travel through a challenging course of hills and tunnels. Drexel hosts the competition to encourage engagement in the fields of science, technology and engineering. For more information on the competition and for the results, please click here.

Dr. Cameron Abrams Published in PNAS for Protein Predictions

Drs. Cameron Abrams (CBE) and Eric Vanden-Eijnden (Math, NYU) were published in PNAS for their collaborative work in predicting protein conformations. PNAS published their research on understanding the flexibility of a protein molecule based on a single snapshot, such as a structure solved from X-ray crystallography. Their paper appeared on March 1, 2010 in the web-based early edition of PNAS. The hardcopy of PNAS will be released April 1, 2010. In addition, Dr. Abrams and research team were published on the front cover of the prestigious journal Proteins. To view the PNAS article, please click here.
