DEAN'S MESSAGE
Engineers Week was a celebration to be remembered at Drexel February 15-19. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and industry came together to raise awareness on the importance of the contributions engineers make to our civilized society and stature as a global leader. A week-long series of events at Drexel highlighted the rewards of a technical education and the impact engineering has on society. Dr. Charles Vest, Drexel's 2010 Engineer of the Year and President of the National Academy of Engineering, reflected on this at our capstone event for Engineers Week. Dr. Vest asked us to continually act as advocates for the engineering profession and for the Grand Challenges of Engineering. At CoE, we're proud to say we've already taken these steps. While we educate prospective students on the Grand Challenges of Engineering through our outreach activities, we encourage them to become engaged in the sciences and engineering. We take great pride in the engineering profession and we salute the engineers of today and tomorrow.

Drexel Celebrates Engineers Week
CoE celebrated its 8th Annual Engineers Week in a series of events February 15-19, 2010. The week kicked off with the Egg Drop Competition which challenged students to create a contraption that would protect an egg from the impact of a 31-foot drop down a steel cable and into a barricade. Additional events throughout the week included the Career Fair that was co-hosted with the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC), Honors Day, an expert panel discussion on sustainability and High School Day. To culminate the week, students, faculty, staff, alumni and industry leaders honored 2010 Engineer of the Year, Dr. Charles Vest, and presented their Alumni Circle of Distinction Awards at a dinner held at the Rittenhouse Hotel.

Dr. Ken Lau and Collaborators Receive $1.125 Million Grant

Dr. Ken Lau (PI, CBE) and co-investigators Drs. Alexander Fridman (MEM), Vadym Mochalin (MSE) and Giuseppe Palmese (CBE), received a $1,125,000 NSF-MRI grant to acquire a state-of-the-art X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) surface analysis instrumentation system. The XPS system will be an openly accessible multi-user shared instrumentation facility at Drexel University. It will serve as a focal point for enabling research and training activities for the scientific community in the Greater Philadelphia region. At Drexel, major research initiatives including the Drexel Plasma Institute and the Drexel Nanotechnology Institute will be strengthened by the XPS system in their studies related to sustainable energy, biomedical technology, nanotechnology and advanced materials.

Dr. Adam Fontecchio Receives Department of Energy Grant
Dr. Adam Fontecchio (ECE) received a Department of Energy STTR Phase 2 grant of $750,000 for his project "H-PDLC Tunable Filter for Hyperspectral Imaging." Working with an industrial collaborator, Optra Inc. of Topsfield, Massachusetts, this project will develop a fast spectrally tunable filter for remote surveillance applications such as airborne detection of activities associated with the production of weapons of mass destruction. A key attribute for this project is the ability to rapidly tune between the visible spectal bands to support hyperspectral imaging from a moving platform such as an aircraft. The Drexel portion of the 2 year project budget is $375,000.
