DEAN'S MESSAGE
|
Engineers Week has demonstrated the great pride and spirit of
CoE. With the insurmountable support of our students, faculty, staff, alumni
and industry partners, the week was a success. The array of events engaged the
Drexel community in the engineering profession while exposing our friends to
the importance of technological advances. In paying tribute to the work of our engineers, CoE also had the
pleasure of honoring distinguished alumnus and hometown hero astronaut, Chris
Ferguson. We salute the contributions of Chris and our engineers. Please join me in
congratulating all engineers for their accomplishments as they engineer new
frontiers!
-Selçuk Güçeri, Dean

Drexel Celebrates Engineers Week

|
CoE celebrated its 7th Annual Engineers Week in a series of events February 16-20, 2009. The week kicked off with the Egg Glide Competition which challenged students to drop a Grade A large egg from the greatest height in Drexel's history-34 feet. Additional events throughout the week included the Career Fair that was co-hosted with the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC), the Honors Day Ceremony, High School Day, and a spirited Pep Rally to welcome home 2009 Engineer of the Year and local hero and astronaut, Chris Ferguson. To culminate the week, students, faculty, staff, alumni and industry leaders honored Chris at a dinner held at the Rittenhouse Hotel in Philadelphia.

Dr. David Breen Receives NSF CAREER Award

|
Dr. David Breen (CS) has received an NSF CAREER award that has a budget of $436,141 over the next 4-years. This research lies at the boundary of computer science in multi-scale modeling and simulation and cellular biology. The technical focus of the research will combine and extend concepts from morphogenesis, cell simulation and evolutionary computing in order to produce an organic approach to shape generation. It will create a new class of self-organizing modeling primitives that may be programmed to grow shapes that meet a specific need while adapting to constraints in the environment with applications in the areas of computer-aided geometric design, swarm robotics, tissue engineering and biological MEMS.

Dr. Frank Moon Receives NSF CAREER Award

|
Dr. Frank Moon (CAEE) has received an NSF CAREER award that has a budget of $400,000. The proposed three-phase research plan aims to develop a framework to investigate the effectiveness of various implementation strategies, conduct a comprehensive laboratory experimental program to refine the framework and validate the proposed approach through applications to three long-span bridges. In total, 24 of our faculty members have received CAREER Awards.

FIRST Scholarship

|
In partnership, Drexel University and FIRST have established five merit scholarships for high school juniors. These scholarships will benefit deserving junior students who are actively involved on a competing FIRST team during their junior year in high school and who would like to attend Drexel. Drexel will award a merit scholarship in the amount of $8,000 per year of attendance to up 5 junior students who are active members of a FIRST team at any high school in the country.
