DEAN'S MESSAGE

Dean

As the demand for engineers continues to grow, CoE is focused on preparing our students to be innovative leaders and creative problem solvers. We are excited to welcome our largest incoming freshmen class and introduce them to the rigorous curriculum that will prepare them to be leaders at the forefront of science and technology. Our alumni have served to be exemplars of CoE's mission. Dr. Baran, Father of the Internet, received the Innovation and Technology award at the White House and Astronaut Christopher Ferguson is leading a Space Shuttle Mission in November. We are proud of the accomplishments of all who make the College of Engineering an amazing institution.  Please join us as we engineer new frontiers!

-Dr. Selçuk Güçeri

DID YOU KNOW?

Engineering students typically enroll in a five year curriculum at Drexel University that includes three co-ops. The co-ops provide students with a year and a half of work experience by the time they graduate.

New Students Enter Drexel's Unique 3+2 Program

SJTUAir Products, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Drexel University's College of Engineering continue their Joint Cooperation Agreement for an integrated 3+2 Program, which enables Chinese students the opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree from SJTU, a graduate degree from Drexel and participate in a corporate work assignment at Air Products. This academic year, SJTU students, Yanzhi Jiang '10 (CBE) and Yanwei Sun '10 (MEM), have come to Drexel as part of the program. Launched in 2007, the partnership was the first of its kind and remains a framework for similar programs. For more information on the partnership, please click here.

Astronaut Christopher Ferguson to Command Next Space Mission

Chris Ferguson Final
NASA has assigned Drexel alumnus Christopher Ferguson '84 (MEM) to command space mission Endeavour STS-126, which is scheduled to launch in November. The flight will deliver equipment to the International Space Station to enable larger crews to reside aboard the complex. Endeavour will carry a reusable logistics module that will hold supplies and equipment, including additional crew quarters, a second treadmill, equipment for the regenerative life support system and spare hardware. For more information on the mission, please click here.

CoE Admits Largest Class Ever

Largest Class
CoE is proud to welcome the largest class of freshmen engineering students in Drexel's history: 716 students representing 26 U.S. states. Academic credentials of the incoming class are equally impressive with an average GPA of 3.53 and an average combined SAT score of 1239. The increased enrollment and quality of our students speaks to the energy and excitement surrounding Drexel's College of Engineering. Please join us in welcoming the new freshmen class!

Going Green: Talented Youth Join in Eco-Friendly Efforts

CTY
In an effort to improve the environment and stimulate the minds of gifted 7th-10th grade students, CoE hosted the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) of Johns Hopkins University on October 25, 2008 for a series of science and technology workshops that expose students to "green" thinking. Over 150 people attended the event and took part in energy and environment themed hands-on workshops and presentations led by Drexel engineers. The presentations included demonstrations of bio-diesel processing, how to make Alkali-Activated Cements (AACs) and a race with Solar Energy K'NEX Car Kits.
