Tomato seedlings are popping up at Wyatt Farms for spring planting! |
April Gardening Vegetables and Herbs It is time to prepare! If you want to grow tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, etc this year, you want to get started now. Here at Wyatt Farms, we have a number of different herbs including sweet basil, English thyme, Greek oregano, and some beautiful strawberries just itching to be planted in your garden this spring. Stop in and check out our variety.
Its generally safe to say that we will not have another frost after April 15. If you started any herbs or vegetable seed indoors, you can start hardening them off around then by placing seedlings in a protected area outside, increasing their length of time outside on mild days. Start with two hours at a time, progressing to full days, and then overnight. You can also plant beans, cucumbers, cantaloupe, honeydew, corn, and summer squash seeds directly in the garden. If you haven't already started tomato, eggplant, and pepper seeds indoors, you should do that now. They should be ready to transplant to the garden in May. Or, stop by Wyatt Farms this month to check out our selection of vegetables ready to plant in your garden.
Need Seeds? We have a great selection of Heirloom and organic vegetable seeds. You can eat tomatoes all summer long off of one packet of seeds!
Looking Ahead? Here's a helpful schedule for planting some of homegrown favorites:
Green beans: April 15th-30th
Tomatoes (transplant from indoors): April 15th -May 15th
Squash, Cantaloupe: April 15th -May 15th
Okra: May 1st -May 15th
Bell Pepper (transplant from indoors): May 1st -May 30th
Hot Peppers (transplant from indoors): May 1st - May 30th
Pumpkin: June 1st - June 15th
Cantaloupe: June 15th - June 30th
Okra: June 15th - June 30th
Broccoli and Carrot: July 1st - July 30th
Collards: July 1st - August 30th
Lettuce and Peas: August 15th - August 25th
Radishes: Sept. 1st - Sept. 30th

Knock out Roses and Drift Roses
We love knock out roses for their easy care and disease resistance. This is a great time to plant them and get them established before the summer heat. We have red, double red, yellow, and white Knockouts and peach, white, and red Drift Roses. Top dress with compost from Wyatt Farms and you will be the envy of your neighborhood.
Fruit Trees and Small Fruit It is a great time to plant fruit trees and shrubs. We have Redglobe Peach Trees, Gala Apples, Golden and Red Delicious Apples, Blueberries, Figs, and Muscadines in the nursery right now. And don't forget that plants and seeds used to produce food - such as fruit trees - are tax-free all of the time!
Perennials and Annuals Tis the season for Annuals and Perennials!! Need a little color in your life? We got it and tons of it. Beautiful hanging baskets dripping with blooms! We have awesome Boston Ferns and they are ENORMOUS! We also have beautiful Kimberly Queen Ferns - these popular ferns can take full sun. Beautiful new annuals arriving weekly for your containers and for annuals beds.

Be sure to check out the large selection of perennials too. It is so much fun to watch them break their winter sleep and come to life. Looking for some long blooming perennials? Some that are blooming now are Bearded Iris, Dianthus, and Mexican Petunias.
Vines and Groundcovers This is also a great month to get new vines established. If there is a trellis, blank wall, fence, or other structure that you wish to enhance, vines are a great way to do that. We have a variety of vines to choose from and the beautiful Carolina Jessamine vine is blooming right now. We also carry the lovely native Wisteria "Amethyst Falls" although similar to the Chinese Wisteria that is swallowing up our forest, our's is quite well-behaved. Another popular vine is Milletia, our evergreen Wisteria, which provides beautiful, dark purple pea-shaped flowers.
Trees and Shrubs
Our trees and shrubs around the nursery have been offering quite a show! Our Cherokee Brave and Kay's Applalachian Mist dogwoods, redbuds and crepe myrtles are beautiful right now. Our Encore azaleas are showing their spring blooms as well. We also have some unique Encore azaleas, lantanas and gardenias in tree form.
Lawns Bermuda, Zoysia, and Tall fescue can be fertilized now. We love Milorganite for its safe, non-burning greening of your lawn. Come in and tell us how many square feet of lawn you have and we can recommend how much fertilizer to use.
Having trouble with weeds? Try one of our two products, Fertilome's Weed Free Zone spray or Weed Out with Q concentrate. Weed Free Zone works for all warm season grasses against broadleaf weeds. Weed Out with Q will fight both broadleaf and some grassy weeds, such as crabgrass but cannot be used on Centipede or St. Augustine grasses.
Fertilize As new growth emerges from your perennials, shrubs, and trees, you can fertilize them. We have a large selection of fertilizers to choose from.
Daniels: 10-4-3 Quite possibly our favorite fertilizer. This is a liquid fertilizer that can be used on just about anything. Houseplants, annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. In the short time that we have carried this product we have heard great feedback from our customers. You will want to give this eco-friendly fertilizer a try.
Osmocote: 19-6-12 This a slow release granular fertilizer that can be used on houseplants, annuals, perennials and shrubs. Osmocote is very easy to apply and lasts up to 4 months.
Fertilome Bedding Plant Food: 7-22-8 A granular fertilizer that is great on annuals and perennials. This is a great fertilizer to liven up your pansies, perennials and snaps.
Miracle Gro All Purpose: 24-8-16 This is a water soluble fertilizer that can be applied to annuals, perennials, shrubs, or trees.
Milorganite: 6-2-0 This is an organic slow release nitrogen fertilizer that is non-burning and therefore goof proof. It can be used on lawns, trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. Tests have shown that Milorganite can also deter deer.
Neptune's Fish/Seaweed Blend: 2-3-1 This is another organic fertilizer that is great on houseplants, annuals and perennials. The odor is intense but you can't argue with the results.
Happy Frog: 5-5-5 This organic all-purpose fertilizer contains live soil microbes, is great for your shrubs and trees and can also be used indoors.
10-10-10: This is your basic fertilizer but with added micronutrients.
GroSmart: 12-6-6 This eco-friendly fertilizer is a professional grade slow-release fertilizer for use on lawns, landscapes and home gardens.
***Don't forget to enrich your soil as well. Fertilizer alone will have a hard time working if you don't have good soil. Enrich and enliven your soil by top dressing with compost such as Wyatt's Black Gold or Mushroom Compost -or you can make your own 'Compost Tea' and water your beds with it.

Beautiful Gardens on a Budget
We all know that gardening can sometimes require sacrifice, but let's face it, sometimes it can be just downright expensive. Here are some budget-friendly tips adapted from Great Backyards magazine for sprucing up your garden this spring season.
1. Prune creatively: Keep up on your pruning to keep the landscaping that you already have looking fresh and at its best.
2. Use crushed granite: This is an inexpensive alternative to bluestone or most other stone options and also maintains a natural feel.
3. Plant with native materials: Exotic and non-native plants are not only more expensive to import, but also may not adapt as well to your area as native plants.
4. Buy your plants in smaller sizes: Although this requires some patience on your part, a three-gallon plant is going to be less expensive than its five- or seven-gallon counterpart.
5. Reduce or eliminate your lawn: Maintenance and fertilizing can be expensive. Opt for areas that you can landscape with groundcovers -or better yet, make your yard work for you by incorporating more vegetables, herbs and other edible landscaping.
6. Plant a kitchen garden: Satisfies aesthetics and your appetite by incorporating raised beds and containers. Look online for people trying to get rid of overage materials, or try "architectural reclamation yards" for brick, stone or even marble.

7. Consult a landscape architect: Having a good plan from the beginning will be less expensive in the end- you'll make fewer mistakes when selecting plants. Be sure to set a budget and also consider implementing your plan gradually.
8. Build steps for seating: Build steps and low walls a little longer than you planned to double as seating. The additional length will cost less than expensive outdoor furniture.
9. Use lanterns: Consider adding lanterns to your garden for lighting rather than expensive lighting systems. They will also make your garden more colorful and unique.
10. Shop smart: Shop at second-hand stores, yard sales, and salvage yards for accessories for your garden such as benches, chairs, buckets, barrels, fencing and birdhouses. Any antique, well displayed, can create interest in your garden.
11. Limit annuals: Choose to plant annuals in containers so you can still change your look seasonally, but opt for perennials for beds and larger landscaping areas.
12. Be Bird-Friendly: Keep birds and butterflies in mind as your plan your garden; incorporate birdhouses, baths and specific-plants that, although relatively cost-friendly, will really improve the overall experience in your garden. |
