East Mountain Residence
This residence was designed for a growing family seeking to live year-round in the place that provided the father so many wonderful memories in his childhood. The house is intended to be functional, low maintenance and practical, while taking advantage of the magnificent views, access to the lake and desire to make the outdoors part of their home. The aspiration to serve both the family and the environment motivated the decision to seek LEED for Homes certification. A fireplace that serves both the indoor and outdoor Living Rooms is surrounded by windows inviting the wooded landscape to be part of the ambience on both sides. The indigenous blue stone and real wood burning units allow for a visceral connection to earth and fire; hearth and home. There is a fully insulated weather barrier between the units, preventing the masonry from expelling heat or coolth from the home. The subtle choreography of the house pushes all of the social activity towards the lake and culminates at the corner of the porch which leads to the path down to the dock. The stairs are not only functional, but provide a respite for sitting and enjoying social activities and views of the lake. The stairs are purposefully directed towards the north, allowing for the longest, most expansive views. |
