Did You Know?
The Milan Furniture Show

Bored of your furniture? What if you could just sit in it to give it a fresh, new shape? That's the idea behind Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka's Memory chair, made of crumbled recycled aluminum, for high end Italian furniture manufacturer Moroso.
This is just one of the wildly innovative green ideas launching in Milan this week at the world's biggest contemporary furniture fair Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2010, April 14-19. Considered the event of the year, the Milan Furniture Fair and its off-site events will draw some 300,000 people for the product launches, innovations, and ideas that define design as we know it -- and yes, that means green design too. Fun Fact

A Wisconsin university has found a new way to cut costs with e-mail - by changing the font. The University of Wisconsin, Green Bay has switched the default font on its e-mail system from Arial to Century Gothic. The university says the change sounds minor, but it will save money on printer ink when students print out e-mails in the new font.
We've created this space using Century Gothic to give it a try. |

Out and About with DxDempsey
What do we do when we're not creating awesomesauce at DxDempsey, Inc.? Here's a quick look at what DxD staffers have been up to this year.
"Strike" at DxDempsey Christmas Bowl 2009 | Michele Dempsey, recently attended an advisory panel discussion at the Northern Tier Career and Technology Center. In an effort to best prepare their students for future careers, they are considering adding a course that would focus on renewable energy and give the students hands-on experience working with such technologies.
Perfect Form! | In March, Michael Muller participated in an advisory panel discussion at Marywood University's School of Architecture titled "Computer Applications in Practice and the Academy". He sat with other area practitioners and faculty members to discuss the possible role of computer technology in the new School of Architecture's curriculum. He has been invited back to Marywood University to act as a Guest Critic for the First Year student final reviews.
Additionally, he met with the Leadership Lackawanna's Class of 2010 at the Alliance Landfill to speak with them about the LEED certification process, specifically about current building products made primarily from material diverted from the landfill.
Trying for a Turkey | Tim McLain recently spoke to a Marywood University Marketing class about the relationship between architecture and marketing. The class focus is generally regarding marketing, product representation, and display in the marketplace as well as impacts on buyers and and trends that influence them. To parallel these core class teachings, Tim looked at architecture and design through the lens of the marketer and suggested that almost all spaces influence the inhabitants of the built environment and their tendencies to interpret their surroundings in ways that directly tie to marketing. This purpose can range from somewhat subliminal, to specific targeted marketing. A variety of DxDempsey projects showed how projects can be integrated with graphics, build or even create a client's brand, or be specifically designed for retail environments. |
DxDempsey Sponsors Earth Day Green Walk
What do you get when you combine 100 10"x10"x10" boxes, six rolls of tape, paint and stencils, voice recorders, a video camera and 3 DxDempsey staff members? No this is not a riddle - it's our top secret (so secret even we don't know what it is yet!) Earth Day 2010 installation piece.
The University of Scranton has partnered with Scranton Tomorrow to organize a weeklong series of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Various programs relating to the theme "Sustaining Scranton: Go Green and Save Green" will take place both on campus and in downtown Scranton from April 17-23. Click for more information about the week's events. Please join us on April 22 from 4:30-7:00 pm on Courthouse Square in Scranton as we unveil our creation for the Earth Day Green Walk.
