The project is an online series devoted to artists in the first decade of their professional career, living and working in New York City. The first two films from the series are available to watch online right now. Read on for more about the project and its accompanying programs.

New York Close Up is an exciting experimental project for Art21, and we would love to hear what you think of the series. We encourage you to please leave your thoughts and comments on the project website, or by connecting with us through Facebook and Twitter.

New Series: "New York Close Up"
Art21 is proud to unveil New York Close Up--a new documentary film series devoted to artists in the first decade of their professional career, living and working in New York City. "We aspire to chronicle what it feels like to be an artist today in New York, what's at stake in our culture, and what it means to make art," state series co-creators Wesley Miller and Nick Ravich in their introduction to the project.

Ten films will premiere exclusively online on Mondays and Fridays throughout the remainder of June. The first two films--A Brief History of Shana Moulton & Whispering Pines and Kalup Linzy & James Franco, That's Entertainment!--premiered earlier this week and are available to watch immediately.

The project is accompanied by a special website where each of the films will premiere. The website will also present on-going commentary from the series creators, as well additional features as the project progresses.

Visit the New York Close Up website to view the first two films from the series, meet the featured artists, read the full series introduction, and much more.

New York Close Up is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Additional support provided by The 1896 Studios & Stages.

Take a moment and catch up by meeting the first six pairs: Maureen Hergott and Julia CopperSmith; Jack Watson and Holly Loranger; Jethro Gillespie and James Rees; Jeannine Bardo and Mary Curry; Todd Elkin and Teri Hu; and Samantha Melvin and Kim Timmons.

Stay tuned to the Art21 Blog as we introduce the final two pairs of Art21 Educators, all of who will join us this summer in New York City and will continue to work with us during the course of the school year!

A Brief History of Shana Moulton & Whispering Pines
A Brief History of Shana Moulton & Whispering Pines
New York Close Up Episode #001: Should an artist separate herself from the character she creates? In this film, artist Shana Moulton traces the development of her ongoing video and performance series Whispering Pines and its central protagonist Cynthia. Shana charts the various ways in which fiction and autobiography meld and diverge in the character of Cynthia, played by the artist herself.

Kalup Linzy & James Franco, That's Entertainment!
Kalup Linzy & James Franco, That's Entertainment!
New York Close Up Episode #002: What's the difference between art and entertainment? In this film, artist Kalup Linzy prepares for his debut performance as Kalup & Franco--a performance art music-based collaboration with the actor James Franco--at Rob Pruitt's 2010 Art Awards at Webster Hall in the East Village. Kalup & Franco are the closing act for a Hollywood-style awards show where celebrity and contemporary art merge in ambiguous ways.

Keep up with the New York Close Up series at the project website. Keep up with the Exclusive series on the Art21 Blog, or subscribe to the series via RSS or iTunes (note: link opens in iTunes). A blend of newly-shot original filming and previously unreleased archival footage, videos from the biweekly Exclusive series focus on singular aspects of an artist's process, significant individual works and exhibitions, provocative ideas, and biographical anecdotes.
