Exclusive Videos: Julie Mehretu and Mary Heilmann
|

Our most recent Exclusive videos feature two abstract painters with studio-based practices who, while working at radically different scales, each treat the surrounding environment as a key element to their work's creation and reception.
 | |
Mary Heilmann: Home & Studio Episode #102: Mary Heilmann leads a tour of her home and studio on Long Island, pointing out how she's modified the surrounding landscape and the ways in which the scenery has seeped into her paintings. |
Keep up with the Exclusive series on the Art21 Blog, or subscribe to the series via RSS or iTunes (note: link opens in iTunes). A blend of newly-shot original filming and previously unreleased archival footage, videos from the weekly Exclusive series focus on singular aspects of an artist's process, significant individual works and exhibitions, provocative ideas, and biographical anecdotes.

Join Us for Culture Wars: April 28, 2010
|
Art21 is returning to host the third installment of Culture Wars: A Night of Trivia with Art21 in collaboration with the 92YTribeca on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.
If you are curious about what contemporary art and culture inspired trivia and are close to NYC, come by and form a team of colleagues, friends, and frienemies--or just come solo and join a team on the spot to meet other art appreciators/lovers/aficionados.
While some teams, such as those representing institutions like the
Guggenheim Museum, the Queens Museum of Art, and the Studio Museum, Harlem, might be
competing for cultural greatness, we know it is all about fun,
friends, and cocktails. But the prizes generously provided by 20x200 and
the Phaidon Store in SoHo are pretty great.
The bar opens at 6:00 p.m. and the event begins at 6:30 p.m.
For those unable to attend, follow the chatter from before, during, and after the event on
Twitter (#culturewars).
Teams may consist of 2 to 5 people. This is not a ticketed event; however, there will be a cost of $5 per team, payable at the bar, to participate.

Art21 Educators 2010-2011: Participants Selected
|
Congratulations to the new group of Art21 Educators! We have selected 15 teachers who will participate in the second year of Art21 Educators--a dynamic professional development, curriculum implementation, and documentation initiative for K-12 art and media educators. This year's participants were selected from a competitive pool of applicants working in diverse schools across the country.
Teachers participating in Art21 Educators develop a deeper knowledge of contemporary art and artists, share strategies for developing and implementing thematic curricula in the classroom, discuss the use of Art21 films and other multimedia teaching tools, and explore New York city museums and galleries. In Art21 Educators' first year, participating educators created a diverse range of curricula exploring themes such as authority and resistance, chaos and change, text and art, alter-egos and identity transformation.

Tabaimo at 601Artspace, Curated by Susan Sollins
|
Now on view at 601Artspace in New York City is an exhibition of works by Japanese artist Tabaimo curated by Art21 Executive Director Susan Sollins.
The exhibition includes a large-scale video installation, dolefullhouse (2007), along with a selection of drawings from her Tawamushi (2008) series.
Utilizing sophisticated computer animation technology, thousands of drawings, and a palette that refers to the tradition of Japanese woodblock prints, Tabaimo's video installations, including dolefullhouse, are presented within and upon a constructed space that creates a sense of physical or psychological intimacy. About this work, Tabaimo says, "I want to create layers of worlds."
The exhibition is on view through July 9. Gallery hours are Tuesdays and Fridays, 2-6 p.m., or by appointment. Call 212-243-2735, email info@601artspace.org, or visit the 601Artspace Web site for more information.
