 Celebrating the 100th Exclusive Video
100th Exclusive Video: William Kentridge

This past week, Art21 reached a milestone: the release of our 100th Exclusive video. This achievement marks a moment of growth for the organization--doubling video production by establishing a year-round video series in addition to the biennial Art in the Twenty-First Century television program on PBS. A cumulative 4 hours in duration, the first 100 episodes are free to view and download on the Art21 Blog, as well as via YouTube, iTunes, and ArtBabble.

To date, the original Web series features stories narrated by 44 of today's leading contemporary artists while giving voice to a number of their artistic collaborators who include choreographers, designers, performers, and studio assistants.
"From its inception, Art21 was envisioned as an organization that would bring contemporary art and artists to a potentially vast media-based audience. It is electrifying to find that, a little over ten years later, Art21 has realized its goals and has indeed become a primary source of information for many millions of people around the world. It is with great pride that we embark on the next 100 Exclusive videos."
--Art21 founder and Executive Director Susan Sollins
To celebrate the occasion, Art21 conducted an online viewer poll to select the 100th episode. The video, William Kentridge: Pain & Sympathy, was selected by Art21's viewers by a margin of 43%. Check out our two most recent episodes below.

Susan Rothenberg: Emotions Susan Rothenberg: Emotions
Episode #099: Filmed at her home and studio in New Mexico, artist Susan Rothenberg explains how she transforms personal experiences and feelings into works that can become an "emotional moment" for the viewer. While discussing the loss of her dog, Rothenberg describes the process of recovering a memory of her pet through the act of painting.

William Kentridge: Pain & Sympathy  William Kentridge: Pain & Sympathy
Episode #100: With his video History of the Main Complaint (1996) serving as a backdrop, William Kentridge discusses how artists draw upon tragedy as subject matter for their work and how drawing itself can be a compassionate act.

Keep up with the Exclusive series on the Art21 Blog, or subscribe to the series via RSS or iTunes (note: link opens in iTunes). A blend of newly-shot original filming and previously unreleased archival footage, videos from the weekly Exclusive series focus on singular aspects of an artist's process, significant individual works and exhibitions, provocative ideas, and biographical anecdotes.
