Laurie Simmons Chats with Susan Sollins
Susan Sollins and Laurie Simmons
Season 4 featured artist Laurie Simmons recently sat down with Art21's Executive Director Susan Sollins to uncover the story of how Art21 began and the experience of filming 86 of today's most thought-provoking artists.

Placing Laurie and Susan in conversation was quite appropriate, since, as Susan mentions to Laurie during the interview, "It is so funny that we're talking about this. I think I've told you this story before, because you were the artist for the first description I wrote about Art21."

 Ask Art:21 on PBS
Jeff Koons's Studio, from Season 5 Episode, Fantasy
As introduced last month, Art21 associate curator Wesley Miller and series producer Eve Moros Ortega took a moment to field audience questions on the Inside PBS blog. Lots of great questions were asked--covering topics such as our artist selection process to our interviewing process--and Wesley and Eve provided some very insightful answers.

When asked about the concept of "factory artists" (e.g. Jeff Koons), Wesley responded: "The concept of the lone artist, struggling alone, is a powerfully seductive modern myth that the television series actively dispels. While there are artists who work alone and only alone today, these artists would also not be as well known to us without the diffuse industry of the art world...So while the myth is sometimes true, it's simply not, nor has it ever been, the whole story."

Read the entire set of questions and answers on the Inside PBS blog.

Bush, Osama Bin Laden, and the Queen Mum (in three versions).
