they were created, highlighting the distinctions between history and
the personal and interpretive reinvention of historical facts.

Art21 Access '09: Highlights |

Art21 Access '09 events are in full swing, with over 300 events taking place since September 28, at venues across the world. Over 300 more events will take place throughout the rest of October. Here are some highlights from the first weeks of events:
The American Academy of Art; Chicago, IL; October 2 Lindsay Harmon, of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, had over 100 participants at her screening. The post-screening discussion mostly revolved around the Paul McCarthy and Cindy Sherman segments and their specific art practices. As an institution, the American Academy of Art tends toward the formal, so the Art:21 episode helped to break down many of the students' boundaries.
The Austin Museum of Art; Austin, TX; October 9 There were about 25 participants at Andrea Mellard's afternoon screening of the episode Transformation at the Austin Museum of Art. Most of the attendees were retirees or students, and the discussion focused on making sense of Paul McCarthy's work, touching on the use of humor in art, different media, and persona and performance. After the success of these afternoon Art:21 events, the museum would like to program more of them.
Art21 Access '09 events continue throughout October. Interested in attending an event? Visit the Art21 Access '09 site to find an event near you. Art21 Access '09 is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts for National Arts and Humanities Month, a nationwide effort that promotes the importance of arts and culture in our daily lives. Visit the official Web site for more information about the month's festivities, including details on how to join the celebration.
