CWA Hosts Wounded Warrior Hunt at Grizzly Ranch
Marines From Camp Pendleton Enjoy Weekend of Duck Hunting
California Waterfowl recently hosted a Wounded Warrior Hunt at Grizzly Ranch. Ten wounded veterans from Camp Pendleton Wounded Warrior Battalion West experienced what a duck hunting weekend is all about. Soldiers received free hunting gear, jackets, blind bags, shotgun shells, calls, hats, shirts, and more on the first Wounded Warrior Hunt at Grizzly Ranch. In addition to the great weekend, all attendees were wined and dined by some of the best duck club cooking we have ever experienced! It was California Waterfowl's pleasure to host this hunt to say "thank you" for all that these warriors have done for our organization and our country.
The weekend could not have been possible without all of the tremendous help from Stuart McCullough, Tim Hudson, Rick Lawrence, Orlando Rocha, Colby Smith, Tom Smith, and Jimmy Flook.

New Specialty Hunts Now Available in CWA Hunt Program
Through our close relationship with private landowners and government agencies, California Waterfowl is now managing hunting opportunities on three distinct properties for youth, women, mobility impaired, and family hunters. Two of the three properties, Denverton and Grizzly Ranch are located in the famed Suisun Marsh. These hunts are in partnership with the California Conservation Fund.
California Waterfowl has also partnered with the Bureau of Land Management, offering hunting opportunities at Cougar Wetland near Galt, next to the Consumnes River Preserve. Each hunting opportunity offers something unique for everyone.
For more information and to apply for these special hunts, go to the CWA Hunt Program Page. |
New Wood Duck Program Coordinator
CWA Welcomes Caroline Brady
California Waterfowl would like to welcome Caroline Brady as the newest member of the CWA team. Caroline is the new Wood Duck Program Coordinator. A passionate waterfowler, Caroline and has worked, volunteered, and hunted in all four major flyways. In the spring of 2011, she worked as a crew leader for California Waterfowl's nest searching and banding team at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. Finding over 1,000 nests, the experience left Caroline in awe of the flyway's waterfowl.
Caroline received her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Forest Biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in her home state of New York in 2006. She completed her Masters at the University of Western Ontario in 2009 in association with Long Point Waterfowl. Her thesis explored possible causes of the decline in the continental scaup population.
To get in touch with Caroline or for more information on the Wood Duck Program, contact her at (916) 648-1406 x101 or cbrady@calwaterfowl.org. |

CWA Participates in Flood Protection Plan Workgroup
California Waterfowl is a part of a coalition of conservation and environmental organizations that participate in a workgroup to evaluate the draft 2012 Central Valley Flood Protection Plan, prior to its public release. The draft Plan, developed by the State Department of Water Resources, is intended to provide a roadmap for the repair, replacement and improvement of the Central Valley levee system, including system-wide investment priorities based on flood-protection requirements. The current schedule calls for the Draft Plan to be presented to the Central Valley Flood Protection Board early next year for subsequent adoption and implementation by the local, state and federal partners that are responsible for flood protection efforts.
In addition to more general comments about the plan, CWA has focused comments on the opportunities the plan could provide for additional managed wetlands and waterfowl habitat as levees are improved and realigned. In addition, CWA has promoted the use of existing scientific information developed as a part of the Central Valley Joint Venture 2006 implementation plan to be incorporated into the flood plan effort. Opportunities for the responsible flood agencies to partner with organizations such as CWA on habitat projects and in providing recreational opportunities have also been highlighted.
Current status information, as well as background documents and technical analysis, can be found at http://www.water.ca.gov/cvfmp/. |
