January was so warm I spent the whole month outside, and forgot to write the newsletter. So here's to catching up on all of the events of the New Year. A few highlights of 2011:
I'm pleased to report that with the outstanding commitment of our donors, we were able to raise over $40,000 for our annual appeal. Additionally, at final count, the June Singer Clinic offered 1624 sessions in 2011- more sessions than any year since the Clinic's inception, and over 50 Public Programs, all taught by volunteer presenters. So a great big thank you to all of our volunteers and donors who made 2011 such a successful year for the Center!
In other news, the Center welcomes Dennis Pomerleau, L.C.S.W. as the new Chair of the Clinic Committee as of January 1st. Dennis has served on the Clinic Committee for the past year, and has been a dedicated Volunteer Therapist since 2006. Our deepest thanks go out to Laura McGrew and Catherine Rondenet for their outstanding leadership as Clinic Committee Co-Chairs in 2011.

Typology: An Exploration of Jung's Theories of Psychic Energy in the Celebration of Personal Development
Lecture: Friday February 10, 7-9 pm
Workshop: Saturday February 11, 10-4 pm
Mary Ellen O'Hare-Lavin, PhD & Tom Lavin, PhD
Lecture $25/ Workshop $75 (CEUs: 2 lecture, 5 workshop)
Typology is the grouping of behavioral tendencies. The Friday evening PowerPoint lecture will explore the role of psychic energy in the development of personality. We will compare and contrast Freud, Adler, and Jung's dynamic approaches to psychic energy, and consider the introverted attitude (centripetal) and the extraverted attitude (centrifugal). We will discuss the functional types, and the four ways of relating to the Self and others.
The Saturday workshop will expand the concepts explored Friday night in a more personal light. Participants are asked to log on to www.personalitypage.com, tap What's my Personality Type, create a password, and take the personality assessment prior to the workshop. Have your credit card ready. There is a $5.00 fee. Download your assessment, print, and bring a copy to Saturday workshop. Through lecture, group discussion, and reflection, participants will begin to understand how to create space to harness one's personal psychic energy and understand how psychic energy affects one's personal and professional relationships; those who are mental health providers will learn new skills to work with the energy of individuals and couples.

Spiritual Self-Awareness
Mondays, ongoing drop-in, 7-9 pm
Weyler Greene, PhD
$10/week
Spiritual Self-Awareness is an on-going group for personal spiritual development. Our work will be based on a study of the roots of our Western religious traditions as found in the Native Middle East. Our study will not focus on the traditions themselves, but on the core insights and awarenesses that gave rise to them. Our study will include Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, Islam, and Sufism.
A number of meditations, based on this ancient material, will be explored. The purpose of this group will be to help each participant develop his or her own unique, personal spiritual practice. Although an on-going commitment to this group is desirable, drop-ins are also welcomed.

March Viewing and Discussion

Viewing and Discussion: Biutiful
Friday March 2, 7-10 pm
Dan Ross, RN
$15 pre or drop in
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Biutiful" stars the Oscar-nominated Javiar Bardem as a low-level criminal in Barcelona who is also diagnosed with a fatal illness. Reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa's film Ikiru, "Biutiful" portrays the journey of a man who tries to come to terms with himself and the waste of his life, and attempts to make amends. Javiar Bardem (No Country for Old Men) draws the audience into this dark and sometimes unredeeming story. Estranged from his wife who has Bipolar Disorder he is responsible for his children as well as a group of factory workers who must work under inhumane circumstances. In an act of kindness turned disastrous Uxbal (Bardem) must confront the consequences of his actions and the morality of his choices. This is a journey into the self that leads Uxbal to reexamine and reconnect with his father who died when he was young. This is another film in which the prospect of death spurs on confrontation with the lived and unlived parts of ourselves and leads to transformation. It is a darkly beautiful film that pulls us into Uxbal's world and his struggle to leave something meaningful behind.

Our new blog is available at our website. This blog will provide film analysis to both anticipate movies we will be showing on movie night and extend their discussion. As with our movie night discussions, films will be used to explore Jungian thoughts and teachings, as well as to amplify current trends in the collective conscious and unconscious. We encourage you to join our discussion! Express your opinions and ideas as an exploration of both self and culture.
