Notes From The Center

Megan Pic

Earlier this month, we celebrated the Jung Center Holiday Party. This is one of my favorite annual rituals, because amidst the short, cold days of Winter, it is a time of merriment, connection, and celebration. This year at the Jung Center we have so much to celebrate.   Due to the remarkable efforts of over 150 volunteers and donors, and careful planning by the Board of Trustees, the Center will be able to offer sliding-scale depth therapy and public programs throughout 2012 and beyond.

We have recently launched our new web-site, designed by volunteer Mike Ross. You can now:

  • Pay for classes online using PayPal
  • Follow the Center on our Blog , Facebook, and Twitter
  • Keep up to date with what's happening at the Center through our message board

We hope you will visit our new virtual home and we hope to see you at the Center in the New Year!

Wishing you joy and peace in 2012,

 Megan Sig

Our new blog is available at our website.   This blog will provide film analysis to both anticipate movies we will be showing on movie night and extend their discussion. As with our movie night discussions, films will be used to explore Jungian thoughts and teachings, as well as to amplify current trends in the collective conscious and unconscious. We encourage you to join our discussion!  Express your opinions and ideas as an exploration of both self and culture.

Thanks to volunteer Laura Slifka, you can now follow the C. G. Jung Center on Twitter.   Be the first to hear about upcoming programs and events at the Center by going to http://twitter.com/ and searching for CGJungCenter

127 Hours

Viewing and Discussion: 127 Hours

Friday January 13, 7-10 pm

Dan Ross, RN

$15

In 2003, Aron Ralston was a climber and extreme sports enthusiast.  He leaves for a weekend of climbing in the beautiful Blue John Canyon in Utah and tells no one where he is going.  Slipping on a rock while climbing in a crevice in a rock formation his arm becomes lodged by the very rock on which he slipped and he is unable to move it.  Brilliantly played by James Franco this film is a wonderful depiction of the archetype of the puer aeternis who comes crashing down to earth and the boulder that pins him down long enough (127 hours) for him to come to terms with himself, his limitations, his mortality.  This is the true story of a man who thought he was invulnerable and perhaps immortal, like Icarus who flies too close to the sun.  We will explore the Jungian archetype of the puer aeternis and what is required for him to change and how a confrontation with death at any age can trigger an introspective journey and confrontation with one's lived and unlived life.

We will also explore alchemical processes of sublimatio, mortificatio and separatio at play in this film and the symbolism of Aron needing to separate himself from the dead parts of himself in order to be freed to live his new self.  It dramatically demonstrates the risk of hanging on to the dying parts of ourselves as we are transformed into a new self.  Flawlessly directed  by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) this austere film with its climactic scene of violence, for which the audience should be prepared, is a lesson for us all to realize that life's limitations can be harsh and brutal but also be the catalyst for transformation.

Spiritual Self-Awareness

Mondays beginning January 16, 7-9 pm

Weyler Greene, PhD

$10/week

Spiritual Self-Awareness is an on-going group for personal spiritual development. Our work will be based on a study of the roots of our Western religious traditions as found in the Native Middle East. Our study will not focus on the traditions themselves, but on the core insights and awarenesses that gave rise to them. Our study will include Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, Islam, and Sufism.

A number of meditations, based on this ancient material, will be explored. The purpose of this group will be to help each participant develop his or her own unique, personal spiritual practice. Although an on-going commitment to this group is desirable, drop-ins are also welcomed.

Astrology
Fundamentals of Astrology:
The Soul's Journey

Wednesdays January 18- March 14, 7-9 pm
Jay Semmler, MS & Weyler Greene, PhD
$150, CEUs: 16

A basic principle of Jung's psychology is that behind the personality lies the deeper intent of the Self, which may or may not be consciously realized. In some of Jung's letters he makes it clear that Astrology can be an important aid in discovering what that intent might be, the obstacles that might obstruct its realization, and the inherent potentials that could facilitate it. Jung's psychological views can contribute to a deeper understanding of the meaning and value of Astrology. Through that lens, this class is structured to provide a basic understanding of Signs, Planets, and Houses and their application in Astrology. There will be some discussion of the evolutionary intent inherent in Astrology as pertaining to the journey of the Soul's incarnation.

Enneagram
Clinical Application of the Enneagram

Antoinette Saunders, PhD

Friday January 20, 1-4pm

$30 (includes 2 CEUs)

The Enneagram is a model of nine distinct personality types. At its core the Enneagram (ennea means nine in Greek and gram means map) describes nine dramatically different ways of perceiving and behaving in the world. Learning the Enneagram helps the therapist in a number of ways. It can enhance diagnostic skills; help to recognize different motivations, coping strategies and relationship patterns; and be a useful tool in creating treatment plans, establishing rapport and developing trust with greater speed and precision. This Clinical Seminar will leave participants with a working knowledge of each Enneagram type, and suggestions for how to consider Enneagram type when diagnosing and developing a treatment plan.

Fairytale Path
Understanding Ego & Shadow Through Fairytales

Saturday January 21, 1-4 pm
Laura McGrew, MA, LCPC
$40 (CEUs: 3)

In this workshop participants will come to understand the concepts of the ego and shadow as defined by Jung through exploring the fairy tale The Robber Bridegroom (Grimm's version). The set of opposites (ego and shadow) have a compensating relationship whereby that which is conscious to us about ourselves is balanced by that which is unconscious to us about ourselves. As Jung wrote, "Only when shadow has been somewhat assimilated, can the ego partially rule its own fate."  In working on this fairy tale, participants will learn about this process of integration. This will be an interactive seminar with some lecture.

Typology: An Exploration of Jung's Theories of Psychic Energy in the Celebration of Personal Development

Lecture: Friday February 10, 7-9 pm

Workshop: Saturday February 11, 10-4 pm

Mary Ellen O'Hare-Lavin, PhD & Tom Lavin, PhD

Lecture $25/ Workshop $75 (CEUs: 2 lecture, 5 workshop)

Typology is the grouping of behavioral tendencies. The Friday evening PowerPoint lecture will explore the role of psychic energy in the development of personality. We will compare and contrast Freud, Adler, and Jung's dynamic approaches to psychic energy, and consider the introverted attitude (centripetal) and the extraverted attitude (centrifugal). We will discuss the functional types, and the four ways of relating to the Self and others.

The Saturday workshop will expand the concepts explored Friday night in a more personal light. Participants are asked to log on to www.personalitypage.com, tap What's my Personality Type, create a password, and take the personality assessment prior to the workshop. Have your credit card ready. There is a $5.00 fee. Download your assessment, print, and bring a copy to Saturday workshop. Through lecture, group discussion, and reflection, participants will begin to understand how to create space to harness one's personal psychic energy and understand how psychic energy affects one's personal and professional relationships; those who are mental health providers will learn new skills to work with the energy of individuals and couples.

Understanding Intuition

Friday February 24, 7-9 pm
Keren Vishny, MD, MA
$20 pre, $25 day of, CEUs: 2

Despite our society's focus on science and reason, the cultural fascination with 'non-rational knowing' is as strong as ever. What is intuition? Why is it important? What role has it played in human history? How do we best make sense of intuition in light of our current scientific understanding of the world? What is the role of intuition in individuation and creativity? In psychotherapy? Drawing on personal and clinical experience, wisdom traditions and modern science, Keren will share her own journey and discuss how we can integrate intuitive knowing into modern living. Participants will learn about the 'language' of intuition from a Jungian perspective; consider the current state of the 'science' of intuition, as well as the place of intuition in a modern scientific framework; and understand how intuition can be used in conjunction with thinking and feeling, while distinguishing between intuition and complexed emotionality.

Exploring Our Archetypes &
Celebrating the Spring Equinox

Saturday March 24, 10-4 pm
Marjorie Graham, MA & Dan Ross, RN
$75 pre, $95 day-of, CEUs: 5

The Spring Equinox was the ancient New Year, and is a time for re-connecting with our archetypes, especially the goddesses Demeter and Persephone. This playful yet profound workshop will enable participants to assess the current status of the goddesses and gods within them, as well as introducing a newer yet older, pre-classical version of the archetypal myth of Demeter and Persephone. Participants will be invited to compare and contrast the pre-patriarchal version of Demeter and Persephone myth to the later classical version. Our day will conclude with a simple ritual honoring the mother and daughter goddesses and celebrating spring's return. Experience the joy of awakening nature in springtime in a more symbolic and mythic way. There will be a one hour break from 12-1 pm for lunch.
