Notes From The Center

Megan Pic

As the summer wanes into early fall I remember saying good-bye to warm nights and days of play as the anticipation of another school year set in.  The freshness of unused notebooks and excitement of meeting new friends contrasted with the sadness of another summer coming to an end.  I am reminded of this duality, which is present in all transitions.

At the end of July we said good-bye to Nell Roberts who is leaving the Center to pursue her graduate degree in Dance/Movement Therapy.  I am grateful for her dedication to the Center over the past two and a half years, and especially most recently in preparing her successor Simon Aronoff, who will serve as the Clinic and Program Administrative Assistant.

Simon comes to us with a decade of experience working with a wide range of progressive nonprofits.  His expertise includes communications and marketing, organizational capacity building, community education and outreach, and office management.  Simon is very excited to join the Center's staff as he refocuses his career path from social advocacy to psychotherapy and clinical social work.  He lives in Evanston with his wife Mary.

Good Luck Nell and Welcome Simon!

September Viewing and Discussion: Stone

Stone  Friday September 9th, 7-10 pm

Weyler Greene, PhD

$15 pre or drop-in

In this film, directed by John Curran, Stone (Edward Norton), a convicted arsonist serving a long prison term, is attempting to get paroled. During the process he has a spiritual awakening and emotionally collides with Jack (Robert DeNiro) the parole officer who himself is steeped in very traditional religious values. Also angling for Stone's release is Stone's beautiful and seductive wife (Millo Jovovich) who has her own ideas about how best to secure her husband's release. Then there's Jack's wife (Frances Conroy) who is deeply immersed in both religion and alcohol. The film is a thoughtful, psychologically nuanced study of the interactions between sensuality, traditional religion, and spirituality.

Board Member Profile: Tom Gorey

Tom Gorey

Tom Gorey, JD, LCPC, has been affiliated with the Jung Center since 2005, when he began his clinical internship at the Center as part of his graduate training in pastoral counseling at Loyola University Chicago.   Upon completion of his internship in 2006, Tom joined the Board of Trustees.  Since January 2010, Tom has served as Board Chair.  In addition to his service on the Board, Tom serves as a Volunteer Therapist  the Center.

Tom has a B.A. from the University of Illinois-Urbana in psychology, a law degree from DePaul University College of Law, a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Loyola University, and a certificate in Jungian psychotherapy from the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago.  Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, Tom worked for over twenty years in health care policy, legislation, and strategic planning, at the American Medical Association and later as an independent consultant.  Tom maintains a private psychotherapy practice, with offices in Chicago and Crystal Lake, and serves as adjunct faculty at Loyola University's Institute of Pastoral Studies.  In addition to doing individual and couples therapy, Tom draws upon his dual training in law and counseling by providing divorce mediation services.

How Tom "Discovered" Jung

Tom admits that he had virtually no exposure to Jung prior to beginning his clinical internship at the Center.  As soon as he arrived at the Center, however, he says that he was hooked.  "Having the opportunity to do my internship at the Center," he said, "was an incredible blessing, and I can truly say it marked a huge turning point in my life.  Working with interesting, motivated clients in a depth-oriented practice setting, and being mentored by talented, seasoned Jungian analysts, well...it just doesn't get any better than that."

Tom's Favorite Book on Jung

Tom is a huge fan of analyst James Hollis, and includes Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life, among his favorite books.  Other favorites include, James Hillman's The Soul's Code, and Jon Kabat-Zinn's, Full Catastrophe Living.
