Notes From The Center

Megan PicWith buds now visible on most trees, and flowers sprouting up in the garden, it seems that Spring has come at last.  The energy of new blossoming is apparent at the Center as well.

First of all, the Board of Trustees recently appointed Diane Miller to serve as Volunteer Intake Coordinator for the Clinic.  Diane has been an important part of the Clinic team for the past several years, serving initially as a Clinic Intern and most recently as a Clinic Therapist.  We are delighted that Diane has agreed to take on these new responsibilities, and we wish her much success in this new role.

Also, we are very pleased to welcome a few new faces to our Spring line-up of presenters.  Prolific author and mystic Andrew Harvey (known for his works The Way of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi, Heart Yoga: The Sacred Marriage of Yoga and Mysticism, The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism) will present his recent film Dancing in the Flames, a documentary about the life of Marion Woodman, with Keren Vishny.

We also welcome Dr. Antoinette Saunders, co-author of A Woman's Search for Inner Peace, 16 Simple Spiritual Practices for Everyday Life, who will be presenting a Clinical Case Seminar on Integrating Spiritual Practice Into Psychotherapy, and Doris Klinkhamer, a graduate of the Analyst Training Program  and the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration, who will co-present Power in the Therapeutic Relationship with Barbara Friedman.   In addition to those presenting at the Center for the first time, we send our deep gratitude to those who continue, again and again, to offer this community a rich curriculum of programs from which to choose.

Finally, at the end of April we said a fond farewell to the orange chairs in the library, which have served us so well for many years and welcomed a sturdier bunch of new chairs.  We hope you will come over soon and help us break them in!

Happy Spring,

Megan Sig

Clinical Case Seminar:

Integrating Spirituality Into Psychotherapy

Friday May 6, 1-3 pm

Antoinette Saunders, PhD

$30 (includes 2 CEUs)

Spirituality can play a significant role in a clinical practice.  We invite clinicians to join in discussing the case of "Catherine" in order to gain a better understanding of what it means to integrate spirituality into a psychotherapy practice. Catherine is a 50-year-old woman who came to therapy to find "inner peace."  She was tired of catering to her alcoholic husband and was seriously considering a divorce. Catherine belongs to the Catholic Church but did not feel that it offered her any direction or comfort. She stated her interest in exploring anything that would give her relief.  We will use this example to discuss how simple spiritual practices can be used as complementary modalities in psychotherapy. Because of the clinical content, this seminar is for students and clinicians only.

Movie Viewing and Discussion: The King's Speechthe kings speech

ALMOST FULL!  PRE-REGISTRATION RECOMMENDED

Friday May 6, 7-10 pm

Ken James, PhD & Jackie Mattfeld, PhD

$15

The King's Speech, winner of four top Oscars, has an outstanding director (Tom Hooper), a wonderful script, gifted actors, and a satisfying ending.  But on second viewing, we see that The King's Speech is more than the sum of its excellent parts.  It is not only the story of a frightened, stuttering prince who must climb the glass mountain and fight with dragons in order to win a King's crown.  What we recognize in Albert's story is the arduous journey of everyone we have known who has had to struggle to overcome the enormous odds presented by a disability, and who through prodigious work, self-discipline and persistence has overcome disability to become who they were meant to be. And through the film's depiction of the roles played by Albert's wife, therapist, and friends in reaching his first triumph, we are reminded that none of us, with or without disability, achieves victory by our own efforts alone.  Join us in viewing The King's Speech for the first, second, or even third time, and discussing the universal themes in this remarkable film.

Pat Otto, ATR-BC, MFA, LCPC

$125 fee, CEUs: 12

Choosing to do a simple creative thing every day is soul work that takes us on a personal journey of self-discovery and expression. Pat Otto will share her experience with Mandala-a-Day YR2010 and guide participants in cultivating their own unique daily creative practice.  A variety of approaches to creative expression as well as possible formats for our daily project will be explored in this workshop.  Encouraged to pay attention to our soul whispers and creative inklings--letting them move lightly into our daily project - our creative spirit will be set free to play.  We will discover how small steps taken day-by-day add up to something much larger than their individual parts, with tangible results and unexpected outcomes.  With meetings scheduled weekly, participants will be able to experience and develop their hands-on practice while receiving support, encouragement, and inspiration from the group.  There is no need for art experience.  Please Bring:  a journal or sketchbook to write/ create in, and a cell phone that takes pictures or a camera.  Held at the Blue Lotus Art Studio, 912 Sherman Ave., Evanston, IL 60202.

Power in the Therapeutic relationshipEnergy of Love

Friday May 20, 7-9 pm

Barbara Friedman, PhD &

Doris Klinkhamer, LCSW

$25, CEUs: 2

In this talk we'll examine how a particular power dynamic has dominated relationship patterns in Western culture. This pattern affects relationships between us and within us. We'll explore the historical context of this hierarchical relationship structure and its effects on the interaction between therapist and client.  Unconscious of these dynamics, therapists can perpetuate and possibly even deepen the very wounds they are trying to heal.  Moving relationships out from the magnetic pull of the archetype of domination and control should be the major goal of healers in our times. As we break the spell of our Cartesian identification with the mind and separateness, we can begin to open to other more interactive and reciprocal relationships and to wisdom from the heart.

Descent, Return and Renewal: Creating Personal Shrines to Explore the Mother-Daughter Relationship

Saturday May 21, 1-4:30 pm

Joanne Ramseyer, LCPC, ATR-BC

$50, CEUs: 3.5

The Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone is the classic story of descent, death and rebirth, and of separation and reunion between Mother and Daughter. Each version tells the story of descent into the underworld and re-emergence, both in the natural world and in our own psyches.  This powerful myth offers contemporary women many avenues for exploring the mother-daughter relationship and illuminating familiar themes associated with the individual roles of 'mother' or 'daughter.'  It also presents a meaningful way to deepen one's understanding of the cyclical nature inherent in life, healing and the creative process.  In this workshop the myth will be discussed briefly using several interpretations.  Participants will be invited to respond by using expressive art and writing activities to create a personal shrine or relic that honors an aspect of the mother-daughter relationship you wish to explore.  No art or writing experience is necessary! Please dress for mess.  All materials will be provided but feel free to bring a journal and any personal charms, photos/xeroxed photos, containers, old jewelry/clothing article you'd like to transform for your shrine. Held at Blue Lotus Art Studio at 912 Sherman in Evanston, 60202.
