From the Executive Director
Pat CochranSummer is upon us, and with it come parties and celebrations.  We got the season off to a great start with our "Food for the Soul" benefit held last month for the June Singer Clinic.  We had a delightful time learning about Indian cooking and spices from chef Usha Bedi, and were treated to the most fabulous food!  It was so fun to watch--with glass of wine in hand--as Usha prepared a five course dinner right in front of us.  We were able to raise over $4200 from the lecture given by Ashok Bedi, book sales, and the benefit, far exceeding our expectations.

The other party we were looking forward to--for Jung's birthday--we have decided to postpone.  See below for more information about that.

And I am so pleased to introduce you to two new members of our staff:  Dave Wright is our independent accountant, who in just a few days has picked up where Brian Carlson left off and is adding his own expertise to the position, giving our staff and board members new ways to understand our financial picture more comprehensively.  David Solem is our new Program Assistant.  He is eminently capable and quite knowledgeable about Jung.  He is currently pursuing his doctorate in psychology, hopes to be enrolled in the Clinical Training Program at the Jung Institute this fall, and is also an accomplished organist and harpist.  David Solem will be in the office on Fridays and occasional afternoons, and Dave Wright will be working outside the office.  We are quite happy to have such talented people join our staff.

Yours,

Summer Programs
Viewing and Discussions

Into the Wild
Friday July 11, 7-10 pm
Facilitated by Jan Nakao, LCSW and Lorna Crowl, LCSW
$15 pre or drop in

Sean Penn's movie Into the Wild is a true story about a college student named Christopher McCandless who abandons his life of privilege for the wilderness in Alaska. This archetypal odyssey takes us on a journey, where we witness our hero's quest for his truth at the elemental level including profound solitude and a complete immersion in nature. From a Jungian perspective we will look at this film like a dream, from both an objective and subjective point of view. In this film, Chris meets characters, if viewed subjectively, can be seen as aspects of himself. Viewed objectively, his encounters are transformative; for those he meets along the way and for those he left behind.  Was Chris's search for Truth a mere compensation for family of origin dynamics, or was it an imperative asserted by the Self? Or was the encounter with the Self an imperative not only for Chris, but for the entire cast of characters in his life?   A discussion of these themes will follow the viewing.

Lars and the Real Girl
Friday August 1, 7-10 pm
Facilitated by Pat Cochran, Psy.D.
$15 pre or drop in

The plot summary for this film sounds strange indeed: an awkward, isolated young man orders a sex doll from the Internet, and believing she is real, introduces her to his family, co-workers and neighbors, and falls in love with her. Despite the bizarre nature of the story, we find that this sweet, compassionate tale provides a way into a fresh understanding of the issues of "fantasy" vs. "reality," mental "health" vs. "illness," and the meaning of relationship. Most importantly, we are offered a view into the process of transformation. A discussion of these poignant themes will follow the viewing.

Workshops

Introduction to Intuitive Painting
Saturday July 12, 10-1 pm
Karen McGinnis
$40 on or before 7/4, $50 after

This workshop is full.  We hope to reschedule another section for the Fall Programs.

This workshop is for anyone wishing to explore creativity, intuition, or gain personal insights. Intuitive painting is a unique and revolutionary way to explore and awaken creative potential by learning to trust one's Inner Voice. This workshop will guide participants to the mysterious realms of intuitive creation where the unpredictable and unexpected are encountered. Participants will practice creating from an authentic place not bound by rules or techniques. No previous art experience needed. All painting supplies included. Held at the Open Studio Project, 901 Sherman Ave, Evanston, 60202.

Out of the Shadow:
What Literature Can Show Us About Ecopsychology
with author Rinda West

This program has been rescheduled.  Details will follow shortly.

This lecture will address the ways in which our culture has estranged psyche from nature, using examples from novels which provide an alternative perspective from that of the traditional western "man against nature." Participants will explore ways that healing psyche and healing nature are related. This program will be followed by a book signing with Rinda West, author of "Out of the Shadow: Ecopsychology, Story, and Encounters with the Land."

Jung's Birthday Party
We've sadly decided to postpone our celebration of the 132nd anniversary of Carl Jung's birth that we had originally scheduled for the 26th of July.  What with Brian Carlson's departure, hiring two new staff people (and training them), working on getting our new website up and running, and a host of other projects and concerns, it seemed as if we might be on the brink of a collective psychotic break if we proceeded with another big party.  On more careful consideration, though, the diagnosis was modified to a pure and simple over-reaching enthusiasm on the part of our new Executive Director, who not only loves a good party but also is eager for the opportunity to meet the folks in our community whom she does not yet know.  Keep your eyes open for the new date in a future newsletter!
Our Spring Appeal
Each year we make two appeals for donations from our community; one in the Spring and one in the Fall.  Thus far this Spring we have raised over $5,900 towards our goal of $10,000.  Fundraising is a essential part of our budget-nearly half of the income needed to support the Center's public education classes and the June Singer Clinic for Depth Psychotherapy (the only sliding-scale clinic for Jungian therapy in the Midwest) comes from donors like you.  Please consider adding your support to those who have generously given so far by clicking here, or sending your check to: The C. G. Jung Center, 817 Dempster Street, Evanston, IL 60201.  Thank you!

We are opening up a satellite office for the use of our volunteer therapists and interns, as we are running out of space at 817 Dempster.  Judy Shaw was so generous in donating nearly all the furniture we need for this new office, but we are still in need of a bookshelf, two chairs conducive to doing therapy, and a small desk.  If you have any of these items taking up space in your basement, please let us know!  Call Megan at 847-475-4848 x221.
