What In The World Is Going On With The Mainstream Media These Days?
I've watched as the investment value in newspapers has dropped dramatically over the past few years, but I was really shocked when a big one, The Rocky Mountain News, just shut down.
Oh, I knew that newspaper advertising has dropped; and that young people don't bother to read newspapers. News, that's what the internet is for, they say. Besides, they don't want to wait until tomorrow to read today's news. They want it now, not tomorrow.
But what about the reports that circulation and readership are way down?
Several years ago I read a column by Wesley Pruden in which he wrote about the reasons why newspaper readership is down and dropping. He said, among other reasons:
"Journalists can't speak the language of their readers. We've developed a distinctly holier-than-thou tone in our voices, painting the very people we're trying to persuade to read our newspapers as irredeemable racists, depicting businessmen as crooks, our religious heritage as bigotry, and the culture of the democratic west as evil. Then we expect them to read our newspapers."
Then there is media mogul Rupard Murdoch, who, in a recent lecture sponsored by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation had some straight talk about the newspaper industry:
"A recent American study reported that many editors and reporters simply do not trust their readers to make good decisions. Let's be clear about what this means."
"This is a polite way of saying that these editors and reporters think their readers are too stupid to think for themselves."
"If your are contemptuous of your customers, you will have a hard time getting them to buy your product."
Even Pew surveys find that the credibility of the media has plummeted to all-time lows; even lower than Congress.
Many in the media have self-diagnosed the problem - biased reporting by some editors and reporters has come home to roost - they say.
However, I really enjoy Dennis the Menace, and reading articles by Paul Prather and John Clay in the Sports section. |

Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson: One Of The Good Guys
A report on Lexington's Prisoner Re-Entry Program
WKYT Reporter Sherelle Roberts maintains a "Good News" Blog on the station's website, WKYT.com. In it she focuses on stories that reflect positive developments and programs.
Ray Larson is one of the good guys. At least in my book. But if you break the law, the Commonwealth's Attorney from Fayette County, is a nightmare.
He's one of those guys who repeat felony offenders, and just about any criminal hates to see--because Mr. Larson loves the law, and if you break the law--it's almost as if it personally offends him.
Like I said, he's one of the good guys.
I've known him for two years now, and Ray Larson is probably one of the most charming and intimidating men i have ever met. Thankfully I get to see both sides (because his charm outweighs his intimidation--if you haven't broken the law).
However, a group of ex-convicts get to experience both sides of the man every other Tuesday at the "Re-Entry Program".
This Tuesday Larson is wearing a finely tailored cobalt blue suit, with a coral blue tie, and his signature sienna colored eye-glasses. It's 8:15 a.m., the location is a meeting room at the Fayette Circuit Courthouse.
Mr. Larson eyes the room filled with six rows of black chairs. In those chairs are about 30 men and women who've just gotten out of prison.
Thirty or so people who know exactly who Ray Larson is.
So Larson circles the room and does the exact opposite of what they expect. He puts on his brightest smile, extends his hand, introduces himself, and then chats with each one as if they are the most important person to him.
He asks them why they were incarcerated, and makes no secret of his disappointment at their answers of: drug pushing, robbery, and wanton endangerment. He's not looking to shame them, he's showing he cares about their future by acknowledging their past. After they get over their initial confusion; many seem receptive.
Following the meet and greet, Larson explains what he's just done. He compares himself to a Wal-Mart greeter. He says the logic behind the greeters is that when people come into the store and are met by a smiling face, they are less likely to commit a crime on the property.
Following that same logic, he explains to them that the face-to-face interaction they just had, will theoretically make them less likely to commit a crime on his turf.
The smile fades from his face and he tells him why they are there at the re-entry program. "It's time to get you s*it together and move on", he says.
Then he hits them with the statistics of recidivism (they're chances of going back to jail). "Nationally 67% of offenders go back to prison", he says, "... in Kentucky that number is 44%" . Then the prosecutor tells them their chances of going back to prison if they stick with the re-entry program; only 22%. Now he has their attention.
He tells them it's a program where people just getting out on parole or probation are offered a way to: stay out of jail, get off drugs, and better themselves. They're not offered a handout, they're offered options. The option to find a job instead of rob. Get an education instead of sell drugs. Or the option to deal with alcohol and substance abuse, rather than be killed by their effects.
Each ex-con is given a packet with information about dozens of services to help them--as Ray Larson says-- "be the type of citizens you want to be".
But Larson stresses that "re-entry" is no free pass. The participants are told if they want to succeed they have to go and get it.
After he finishes speaking, Larson introduces the next speaker (who will offer more advice and services), picks up his extra tall Styrofoam cup of coffee and with a smile smoothly strolls out of the room.
The next speaker tells the listeners what they've just seen is "remarkable". She, with indignation, declares that one of the toughest prosecutors in the nation just greeted them, and gave them options to succeed. She says that kind of deed by a man in his position is unheard of.
They are just as surprised as I am by that comment.
But Larson did not see our expressions, or hear the accolades. It's 8:45 a.m., and he's beginning his very busy work day as one of the most hard-nosed prosecutors around. Very few people know he just spent his morning possibly saving or changing lives; and most never will; because he doesn't brag about it.
That's why I'm convinced - Ray Larson really is one of the good guys. |

Fayette County Victim's Rights Week Kick Off
JUSTICE FOR VICTIMS JUSTICE FOR ALL
Please join us for our 4th Annual "Second-Class Citizen" Luncheon & Recognition Ceremony
NO! We don't really think victims of crime are second-class citizens, but the treatment they receive by the criminal justice system sure leaves them with that impression. So, this year . . . let's get together and:
Honor some of our Heroes and point out some Zeroes;
Laugh a little and cry a little, and re-energize ourselves as we continue to demand that our elected leaders, lawmakers and courts realize that crime victims should be treated better than the criminals who victimize us.
The effect of crime upon victims and their families continues well past the conclusion of a criminal prosecution. Hear a father speak about the ongoing suffering of his family and his efforts to toughen Kentucky laws.
In keeping with our treatment and theme, the menu for our "Second-Class Citizen" Luncheon and Recognition Ceremony will consist of hot dogs (meat and veggie), chips and a cookie. We promise you will enjoy yourself.
There is no charge for the luncheon, but we must know if you plan to attend.

Case #1: Commonwealth of Kentucky v. Adele Craven
The murder of Steven Craven by wife Adele Craven in 2000 gained national attention as the story surrounding the plan to murder her husband unfolded. Adele and her alleged 'lover' Russell McIntire hired hit man Ronald Pryor to carry out the brutal beating and murder of Steven Craven in his own home. Adele went so far as to establish an alibi, conveniently have both of their two children out of the home on the day of the crime, and also stage a ransacking in hope of successfully forging her innocence.
 |
 |
Prosecutor Luke Morgan |
Defendant Adele Craven | Det. Wayne Wallace led the investigation and was the first to question some of Adele's suspicious activity surrounding the murder. A search of Adele's car revealed an overnight bag complete with make-up, family passports, a phone charger, and clothing for both of the children and herself. Friends and family members who were questioned also recalled that Adele had mentioned that she wanted her husband dead. Within nine days, Adele was arrested for the murder of her husband. Shortly following her arrest, Rusty McIntyre was also incarcerated, where he told police about the hit man, Ronnie Pryor.
The trial and sentencing of Adele Craven was a long process that was heavily covered by media outlets throughout Kentucky and the story was even featured on national television. In the first trial, led by prosecutor Luke Morgan, Craven maintained her innocence; it finally resulted in a hung jury. Would Adele Craven be just the fourth woman in the history of Kentucky to receive the death penalty? Listen as Luke Morgan discusses the account of the case, including the details and outcome of the second trial, with Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson and WVLK host Jack Pattie on American DA - LIVE on Friday March 6, 2009.

Case #2: Commonwealth of Kentucky v. Ondra Clay
 |
 |
Prosecutor Kimberly Henderson Baird |
Prosecutor Kathy Phillips |
Ebony Smith was sodomized and murdered in her apartment by her 'friend' Ondra Clay in the early morning hours of May 7, 2005. Clay did not have to force his way into the home of Ms. Smith, but the evidence collected inside of the apartment clearly shows that Clay's entry was unwelcome. Clay attempted to cover up his DNA evidence and avoid leaving other clues for the police that may have identified him as the murderer, but was unsuccessful in his attempts, which gave detectives enough evidence to arrest him. The DNA recovered from the scene played a crucial role in the conviction and sentencing of Ondra Clay for the murder of Ebony Smith, and was important in cracking past crimes in Lexington that were left unsolved.
 |
Det. Bill Brislin | Prosecutors Kimberly Henderson Baird and Kathy Phillips took this case to trial, with great assistance from Det. Bill Brislin of the Lexington Police Department. The team successfully convicted Ondra Clay of Wanton Murder and first degree Sodomy with a sentence of life in prison without parole for 25 years. Through analysis of Clay's DNA evidence and further research, they were also able show Clay's involvement in other rape cases that were previously considered 'cold cases'.
Listen as Kimberly Henderson Baird, Kathy Phillips, and Det. Bill Brislin recount this unusual case with Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson and WVLK host Jack Pattie on American DA - LIVE on Friday March 13, 2009.

The Thrill Is Gone . . . To Prison Tip leads to arrest of church burglars.
 |
 |
Michael Eubanks |
Joshua Rector | In August of 2008, Lexington police responded to a rash of burglary complaints in the Eastland Drive area. At approximately 3:00 in the morning, unknown suspects had broken into three churches, stolen items including computers, digital cameras, and money, and attempted the same at a day care center. Investigation revealed that some of the stolen property had been discarded at a nearby convenience store; review of the security footage from the crime scenes and store showed the suspects to be three white males.
The pictures were provided to the media and the next day one of the burglars was identified as Michael Eubanks, age 19. Interviews and other evidence led to the identification of the other two culprits as Joshua Rector, age 24, and a juvenile. Eubanks and Rector confessed to the crimes, telling the detectives they knew what they were doing was wrong but that they enjoyed the thrill of breaking and entering the churches.
 |
Prosecutor Susan Speckert | Criminal records show that Eubanks has six prior convictions for misdemeanor offenses including Theft, DUI, and Assault. He pled guilty to Burglary and was sentenced to two years, probated for five years. Restitution, to be paid by both defendants, was set at a total exceeding $5,000 for the property damage and loss caused. Rector was convicted in 2002 of the burglary and theft of a different church; he was sentenced to serve six years for those crimes and the record does not show any payment of the $9,000 restitution ordered in that case. The record does indicate that Rector was paroled in February of 2005 and returned to prison after being convicted of misdemeanor Theft and Public Intoxication charges. He served out his sentence in June of 2008, just over two months before he was arrested on these crimes. Rector pled guilty to Burglary and was sentenced to serve three years in the penitentiary. |
