Officer Don's Crime/Safety Prevention Tip |
Business Crime Prevention Tips
Crime costs businesses billions of dollars each year. As an employer, you have a duty to keep the workplace as safe as possible for your employees and customers.
Think about ways to prevent crime - failure to take good precautions invites crime into business;
Take action in more than one way - don't rely on one measure to prevent all crimes;
Train staff to spot thieves and to watch out for suspicious behavior;
Establish and enforce clear policies about employee theft, employee substance abuse, crime reporting, opening and closing of the business, and any other security procedures;
Use good locks, safes, and alarm systems;
Mark all of your equipment with a unique identifying mark or number. Although some equipment, such as cash registers or computers, have their own serial number, don't rely on these. Those numbers can be easily removed;
Never store all records on the premises, always have a back up. This information is invaluable in assessing loss and for investigative purposes later.

Lexington's Crime Rate is on the Rise! Expected Punishment - Repeat Criminal Offenders Aren't Stupid - They Know The Risks Of Committing Crimes These Days
If criminals do not expect to be caught AND punished - they'll commit crimes. It is called "expected punishment."
Lexington's crime rate is on the rise.
In September it rose almost 15%; In October it rose almost 19%, In November it rose over 6%.
What's going on? Why is our crime rate going up? Because criminals know the chances of going to jail these days are pretty slim. That's why!
First, they are betting that they won't get caught - and, even if they are caught - they know that the chances are pretty good that they won't be sent to jail. And why shouldn't they think that?
Our prisons and jails are overcrowded. . .
It costs too much to incarcerate criminals. . .
We need to release criminals early from prison. . .
"Non-violent" property crimes aren't serious enough. . .
These "non-violent" criminals should be probated. . .
The message to the thugs - CRIME PAYS!
Our crime rate rises and falls based on whether criminals, especially repeat offenders, think they will be caught and, more importantly, whether they think they will be incarcerated. It is called "Expected Punishment."
Crime increases as the "expected punishment" for committing crime drops.
"Expected punishment" is a function of the risk of being caught and convicted and multiplied by the median time served for the crime.
When the "expected punishment" goes up, criminals know it and are unwilling to take the chance, and the crime rate goes down.
However, when the "expected punishment" goes down, criminals are aware of that too, and their willingness to take their chances with the court system increases, and the crime rate goes up.
Most of these predatory repeat offenders are not too concerned about their criminal record. Another felony conviction on their record doesn't really bother them. They just want to avoid prison or jail.
These repeat offenders are not stupid. They know what the chances of going to prison are. That's what these predatory repeat offenders are counting on. These days the "cost" (or "expected punishment") of committing crime is very, very low.
So what's the message to these predatory repeat offenders? CRIME PAYS! That's the clear message they are getting from our criminal justice system these days. |

Brother-Sister Crime Duo Receive Probation

 |
Corian Blasdell |
Jonathon Blasdell |
On March 6, 2008, Jonathon Blasdell and h is sister Corian Blasdell were arrested and were indicted on five counts of felony Theft by Unlawful Taking. The two engaged in a scheme in which they collected expensive DVDs and video game cartridges inside Walmart stores, then Corian filled a black bag with them while Jonathon went elsewhere. He then provided a distraction at the entrance as his sister left the store with the stolen merchandise.
 |
Prosecutor Jim Havey | Both defendants pled to a single count of felony Theft by Unlawful Taking, and the Commonwealth recommended sentences of two years. While the two were out on bond in Fayette County, they were arrested for and convicted of engaging in the same theft scheme at a Boyle County Walmart, so the Commonwealth objected to probation. Their two-year sentences were probated for four years. |
