Dear Friends,
I hope that you have all had a spiritually fulfilling Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and that you had an opportunity to attend services at some of our local Hudson County synagogues. With Sukkot upon us, the holiday spirit continues with many exciting and innovative programs by various Jewish organizations throughout the county.
The crisp Fall weather is beginning, and that means cooler weather and a lot of opportunities to get out and meet other local residents. Some of the offerings coming up include; the much-awaited Parent & Child Sing-Along on October 14, our kosher wine tasting event on October 18, B'nai Jacob's Lox 'N Learning 5773 program beginning on October 21 and continuing on November 2 with an election-related presentation by Zachary Metz of the Jewish Dialogue Group, and the first Jewish Business Networking Group meeting to be held on November 13. Please don't miss out on this wonderful wide range of activities for all ages and interests, which provide an opportunity to learn, grow, enjoy, and meet other Hudson County residents.
Finally, it was a pleasure meeting so many of you at last weekend's Hoboken Arts Festival where our HudsonJewish booth was side by side with United Synagogue of Hoboken, Temple Emanu-El of Bayonne, and Camp Galil. We were also excited to have many of our synagogue partners join us at our booth, including Cong. Bnai Jacob, Temple Beth-El of J. City, and Temple Beth El of No. Bergen. It was a great day (despite the intermittent downpours), and all of us thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of you and hearing about your interests, which will help us to plan future programs.
Wishing you a wonderful month of October, and as always, if I or my fellow Board Members can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at Info@HudsonJewish.org .
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum, A New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation having 501(c)(3) status

CONGREGATION B'NAI JACOB LAUNCHES
LOX 'N LEARNING 5773 |
| |
Congregation B'nai Jacob has hit the target on Jewish programming for adults with their highly successful Lox 'N Learning program, a Sunday morning monthly series focusing on Jewish arts and culture. The first program of the New Year begins Sunday, October 21, from 10:00am - 12:00pm, with the topic "Jewish Farming in New Jersey" and a screening of the documentary film, "The Land Was Theirs" about the Jewish agricultural pioneers of South Jersey.
The program series, now entering its 3rd year, is the brainchild of B'nai Jacob's Spiritual Leader, Cantor Marsha Dubrow, Ph.D., who also teaches courses on Jewish arts and culture at NYU. "As a Jewish cultural historian with an emphasis on the arts, I realized that there is a phenomenal richness to the global Jewish experience that functions outside of prayer and ritual and sanctuary activities. It is important for Hudson County Jews to understand our cultural heritage too." That is why this exceptional series is open to everyone in the community. Previous Lox 'N Learning programs have included: Synagogue Architecture Around the World, Yizkor Books: Holocaust Remembrances; The Art of Jewish Papercutting ; Israeli Pop Music; Ladino Language and Music; Growing Up Jewish in Egypt; Accordianist Ben Laden; and prominent Jewish-Indian Artist Siona Benjamin. Future Lox 'N Learning programs will include the December 2nd event (co-sponsored by HudsonJewish) featuring "Pete Rushefsky and His Tsimbl" (Pete performs with Itshak Perlman on his latest Jewish CD), as well as "Jewish Archeology 101: Coins, Flasks and Oil Lamps"; "Tikkun Olam in Concepts and Practice: From Occupy Wall Street to the World Food Program"; "In the Key of Female: Women and the Cantorate in America"; and "Looking for Love in All the Right Places: Intergenerational Caring". Next spring, B'nai Jacob will sponsor Lox 'N Learning 'On the Road' a Sunday road trip to explore the remnants of these once thriving communities, as well as a visit to the fascinating Wheaton Arts Center, home of New Jersey's world-renowned Glass Museum. On a previous LNL 'On the Road' trip, Hudson County's curious Jews of all ages boarded a bus to America's first Jewish residence, the Israel Gomez House in New York State, and also toured the nearby Kedem Winery where a delicious wine tasting was offered, and the fall foliage was divine.
For only $5.00 to cover the cost of the lox and bagels breakfast, members of the entire Hudson County Jewish community and beyond can schmooze, listen and learn. So, please come on out and join Cong. B'nai Jacob for the entire Lox 'N Learning series. Location: 176 West Side Avenue, Jersey City. For further information, visit www.bnaijacobjc.org |

Currently this program provides free books to over 210 children in our area, with a waiting list pending. We are now getting ready to launch a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. While we have made significant progress in growing this program in our area, the program does not charge the participating families and relies on outside donations and funding to pay the nominal cost per child for the books to be distributed. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org . |
