September 2012 Events
Save the Dates!

Dear Friends,

Well, it's finally the time of year that we have all been expecting for the past few weeks. The time when summer is over, vacation time draws to a close, and most importantly school is back in session! This is an important time of year, commencing with the High Holidays, followed by Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Rosh Hashanah begins this year on the evening of Sunday, September 16th and ends on the evening of Tuesday, September 18th. Yom Kippur begins on the evening of Tuesday, September 25th, and ends with Neilah services on Wednesday, September 26th.

At this time of year we all must review our actions over the past year and determine what positive changes we will make for the coming year ahead. For those of us with children, it is a critical time to spend talking to them about the significance of the holidays, its customs, and beautiful rituals. Even young children can be involved in services and practices, most notably the Tashlich service, which involves the ritual of casting bread into the water as a symbol that we are casting our sins away before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Many of our local synagogues have community Tashlich services that are appropriate for even the youngest of children, as well as singles, families, and seniors.

Additionally, this year several synagogues are offering High Holiday tickets for the entire family at no charge. Those synagogues include Cong. B'nai Jacob, Cong. Mt. Sinai, and Temple Beth-El of J. City. Other synagogues have tickets at reasonable costs, or at no cost to members. Please check out www.HudsonJewish.org for a full listing of all of our County's synagogues. No matter where you choose to go, please do participate in the varied services that our community has to offer - whether your preference is Reform, Conservative, Traditional, or Orthodox, there is something for everyone. You will be met with wonderful leadership, members, and volunteers at each of these organizations, who will welcome you whether you are a seasoned synagogue-goer or a first time attendee. Be sure to look for HudsonJewish Board Members, who are also represent members of every synagogue in our County. Additionally, this month's calendar is chock full of activities and events of all kinds for all interests. Please be sure to check them out and attend a few, to see how much our community has to offer.

At this time of year, I and the entire Board of HudsonJewish would like to wish you and yours a very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year. May the coming year be filled with joy, learning, knowledge, and a strengthening of your own family as well as that of our entire Jewish community. L'Shana Tova!

Warmly,

Family Foundations and Donations Sought for PJ Library Program

HudsonJewish in partnership with United Synagogue of Hoboken, and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City is seeking information/introductions to Family Foundations and/or individuals who have a special interest in supporting Jewish education, literacy, and children's programs in Hudson County, to help fund the PJ Library program. We are now getting ready to launch a PJ Library monthly e-newsletter for participating and interested families. For further information on this worthwhile program, please visit their website at www.PJLibrary.org . If you or anyone you know is interested in making a contribution and sponsoring this wonderful and important project, please contact Raylie@HudsonJewish.org .
