Dear Friends,
This month marks the beginning of summer, hot weather, vacations, and barbecues. While we are busy shedding our winter coats and donning our flip-flops, it is important to remember that our synagogues and organizations are still running exciting and innovative programs all summer long for all age groups. From the Israel Day Parade to Indian Artist Siona Benjamin, Tot Shabbat to Shabbat dinners in the park, films to flea markets, and new Officer Installations at various synagogues, this summer will be a busy one for our Hudson County Jewish community.
I urge you to use the summer months to relax, rejuvenate and spend time with family and friends. It is also a great time to take advantage of the many offerings in our community while you enjoy summer's lazy pace, beautiful weather, and traditional activities. It is a great time to bring your partner, your children, your parents, and your friends to any of the numerous activities being run this June and July, and get to know your fellow neighbors. As always, you will see members of the HudsonJewish Board and our community Liaisons at various events every month, so please don't be shy and come up and say hello.
Thanks to everyone who visited the HudsonJewish booth at the May 6th Hoboken Arts Festival. We truly enjoyed meeting each and every one of you, handing out information (and balloons), and having you join us by signing up for our monthly newsletter. If you have not yet signed up, please go to our website at www.HudsonJewish.org and sign up right away, so that you will be in-the-know about all of the wonderful offerings that our community has for you. Thank you as well to all those who volunteered to staff our booth, including volunteers from our own Board, as well as representatives from Temple Beth-El of J. City, Moishe House, and United Synagogue of Hoboken!
Finally, let me remind you again that we now have a special section for our youngest members, entitled Children's Programs & Activities, where you will find all sorts of events catering to our little ones. There are also spots opening up for families with children ages 6 months to 5.5 years in the PJ Library program, as a result of the re-registration efforts, cooperatively offered by United Synagogue of Hoboken, Temple Beth-El of Jersey City, and Hudson Jewish. You will find information on signing up for this wonderful free children's literacy program in the section below.
Thank you again for your interest, support, participation, and cooperation in helping to re-build Hudson County's Jewish community. From what you will see in this month's newsletter, we are well on our way to a revitalized and vibrant Jewish neighborhood.
Warmly,
Michelle Levine, Chairperson Hudson Jewish Community Forum,

Honoring Irwin Rosen of Temple Beth-El |
| |
On Friday June 15 at 8pm Temple Beth-El of Jersey City will honor their outgoing President, Irwin Rosen, after an incredible 19 years of service. While there is much excitement surrounding the Installation of the new President, Kay Magilavy, there will be lots to miss about Irwin and the special way in which he made the temple a home away from home. "There is nothing about this building and congregation that Irwin doesn't know. He is one of the most positive people I know, he is always upbeat, even when we had cats in the ceiling" says Kay Magilavy, incoming President. Yes, you heard right folks - cats in the ceiling! There seems to be no end to what and how much Irwin will do for his beloved Temple Beth-El, from watering the flowers outside the building, to greeting all who enter on Shabbat and holidays, arranging for supplies and refreshments, to wrapping gifts for each Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
"Irwin is the true meaning of a mentsch, that word was made for him" says Robin Schkretz, a fellow Board member. "We've never had any President who dedicated their heart and soul to Temple Beth El like he did. He's one-of-a-kind!". The words kept flowing as we spoke with people about Irwin at a recent Beth-El First Friday dinner. Irwin has been at the temple longer than most, and his family was there before him. He takes joy in pointing out the names of all of the temple supporters, and makes sure that they are appreciated for their contributions. He always knows the perfect way to approach the right person or family to underwrite a particular program, and inspires all to see the uniqueness and special gifts that this historic congregation brings to Jersey City. Nancy Sambul, who has served on the temple Board with Irwin for all these years, could not say enough. "What you realize is that the temple is truly Irwin's home, not just his spiritual home. There isn't anything he wouldn't do; from weeding, watering plants, beautifying the exterior of the building, taking out the trash or calling others to take out the trash, to supervising volunteers from Goldman Sachs" and the most wonderful compliment "Irwin made you feel like he was hosting you in his own home when you entered the temple".
With a ribald sense of humor, modesty, and the ability to make each person feel that they were welcomed and accepted whether a long-time member or a new participant, Irwin will be sorely missed as the head of Temple Beth-El's Board. We know that Irwin is looking forward to some much deserved rest and relaxation, but we are sure to see him planting, organizing, or even catching cats (which hopefully won't be needed again) again in the future.
Please join Temple Beth-El in honoring Irwin at the upcoming June 15 Installation, where he will be joined by former Rabbi and long-time friend, Rabbi Kenneth Brickman. Let's surround Irwin with those who love, appreciate and respect him, and thank him warmly for his most generous and all encompassing service to Beth-El for the past 19 years! |

Jewish-Christian Trip |
| |
Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) is partnering with the Northern NJ Catholic community in a Jewish-Catholic trip to Israel in October. This Jewish-Catholic Interfaith Trip to Israel is a discovery of our own love for Judaism. It will provide a unique appreciation of our own faith and traditions that comes from sharing it with others. The trip is a journey of mutual understanding of our love for Israel, as well as an exploration of shared traditions and shared passions, about which few of us are aware. It will take you beyond your daily life, and impart a new respect for each other's faith as vital partners. This trip is an opportunity to advance the quality of our leadership, in our daily lives and in our Jewish community. It is also an opportunity to build new relationships in support of Israel, and to build coalitions locally that advance and improve our lives as citizens.
The trip will be led by Clergy Leaders; Rabbi Neal Borovitz, Temple Avodat Shalom; Most Reverend Arthor J. Serratelli, Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson, NJ, as well as Jewish Federation Professional Staff; Joy Kurland, Director of Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey's JCRC. The guide will be David Hyman, former Jewish Federation Shaliach, Israel Representative, and the Tour Agent is Anne Breslin, Great Experiences, Inc. (former member of the JCRC Interfaith Committee).

One Book, One Community |
| |
Temple Beth-El of Jersey City will be participating in JFNNJ's One Book, One Community project this year. This program, in its second year, provides an exciting collaborative programming opportunity for synagogues, agencies, and other Jewish communal organizations to join together in reading a specific book, and holding events and having shared conversations around the book and its themes. The book this year is The Zookeeper's Wife, an amazing true story by Diana Ackerman about the Warsaw Zoo and rescuing Jews during the Holocaust. The book brings to light a story of real-life heroism from the darkest days of World War II. In the ravaged Warsaw of the early 1940's, a zoologist's family managed to carve out a refuge of light, safety, and humor for those fleeing Nazi persecution. "A lovely story about the Holocaust might seem like a grotesque oxymoron. But in The Zookeeper's Wife, Diane Ackerman proves otherwise. Here is a true story - of human empathy and its opposite - that is simultaneously grave and exuberant, wise and playful. Ackerman has a wonderful tale to tell and she tells it wonderfully" - Susie Linfield, Review in The Washington Post.
Those interested can "sign-up" to get the book in paperback for $8 by emailing Rabbi Debby Hachen of Temple Beth-El at RabbiHachen@betheljc.org by July 10. If you are a Hudson County synagogue or other agency who would like to run your own program around this book, please contact Nancy Perlman of JFNNJ's Synagogue Leadership Initiative (SLI) at 201-820-3904 or via email at NancyP@JFNNJ.org . JFNNJ would be delighted if our HudsonJewish friends wanted to participate in this enjoyable program, and it is a great way for a synagogue, group or organization to engage the people they already know and attract people who aren't currently involved. Each group will use the book in its own way - as a springboard for conversation, study, and celebration, not only of the book but of the issues, the culture, and the ideas that it raises. There will be community activities relating to the book at lots of NNJ area congregations throughout the September - March time frame, one of which will be held at Temple Beth-El of J. City.
Last year's program was wonderfully successful: 19 different events and programs were created around the featured book, and more than 430 people attended the culminating event in March. Be sure to join this program, and let's celebrate that we're all on the same page! |
