HudsonJewish Presents: "The Gefilte Fish Chronicles," Monday, March 26, 7PM
|
| "Don't just stand there, cook! Don't just sit there, eat!"
In 1904, Abe and Minnie Dubroff immigrated from Russia to Brooklyn where they raised seven daughters and a son. For a century, the family has gathered at Passover and celebrated the Seder together... first in Brooklyn, then in Boonton , New Jersey . Led by the three surviving sisters, Sophie Patasnik, Peppy Barer and Rosie Groman, traditional preparations were made for the Seder at Peppy's home in Newburgh. Six weeks before the Seder they shopped and chopped, tasted and seasoned. Using recipes nearly a century old, they began to put together the gefilte fish, cholent, horseradish and sponge cake. This is a loving, living album of the Seder. "I've heard it said many times, and it's the truth: The family that sits around the table together, stays together. And we have many tables," Peppy says. This wonderful film, soon to be a musical, will be shown on Monday March 26, 2012, 7pm at Temple Beth-El on Kennedy Blvd. in Jersey City. Suggested Donation: $5.00. DVDs and Cookbooks will be available for purchase. |

Save the Date for United Synagogue of Hoboken's Annual "Casino Night"
|
| The United Synagogue of Hoboken will be holding its sixth annual Casino Night on Saturday, March 3, 2012. This is one of the synagogueʼs best-attended events; last year over 250 people came for fun, food and fabulous prizes. Proceeds are used to support the synagogueʼs programming throughout the year, including adult education and community service events. In addition, each year a portion of the money is donated to local charities. This yearʼs recipients will be the Hoboken homeless shelter; The Jubilee Center, which provides after-school programs and hot meals to children from public housing; and Hudson County Casa, which provides volunteers to advocate for children in foster care.
Attendees love the opportunity to enjoy traditional casino games such as poker, blackjack, roulette and craps in a fun, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Rather than cash, winnings are allotted as raffle tickets which are used to win incredible prizes. Last yearʼs prizes included a diamond necklace, an Eli Manning autographed football, several vacation packages and many more.
Once again, the fabulous Swingadelic will keep the party rocking with their eclectic mix of jazz, swing and other favorites. A delicious kosher buffet and open bar are also included.
The party will take place at the Elkʼs Club in Hoboken. Doors open at 7:00pm and gaming begins at 8:00. Tickets can be purchased through the United Synagogue of Hoboken office or website and are $75 each.

Thursday, March 8, 7:30pm - 10:00pm: Post Purim Concert with Alicia Jo Rabins and Girls in Trouble. Poet and multi-instrumentalist Alicia Jo Rabins knows that Esther wasn't the only girl with some problems. The songs of Alicia's band "Girls in Trouble" feature androgynous storm demons, jealous sisters, knife accidents, and other unusual details of women's experience in the Bible and Jewish texts, as indie rock meets Jewish mythology. A classically trained violinist since age 3, Alicia grew up practicing Bach and sneaking out to Baltimore punk shows. She began touring at eighteen, then traveled to Jerusalem to immerse herself in a new realm-- the study of ancient languages and texts. Alicia began writing songs, taking Biblical women as her subjects. "Girls in Trouble" was born as Alicia's love of American folk and underground rock fused indelibly with her knowledge of the Hebrew Bible. Alicia Jo Rabins will be featured at the United Synagogue of Hoboken's Post-Purim concert on Thursday, March 8. Food and drinks will be served at 7:30pm, with the concert at 8:00pm. Tickets are $15, or $12 for young adults under 35. The event takes place in USH's Social Hall. Thursday, March 15, 11:00am - 12:15pm: Spiritual Eldering comes to North Bergen. The Joy of Sage-ing. Wondering about growing older? Thinking old age (or middle age) is not as exciting as it could be? Wondering how do we harvest the wisdom of your life? The Sage-ing journey empowers us to discover the special sacredness of our life cycle. Fifteen years ago Reb Zalman wrote, "Elderhood is a time of unparalleled inner growth having evolutionary significance in this era of world-wide cultural transformation. It is a call from the future, a journey for the health and survival of our ailing planet earth." How much more so now! Temple Beth El is proud to bring this groundbreaking work to our community. This program is based on the Spiritual Eldering work, building on the teachings of Reb Zalman and his book, From Age-ing to Sage-ing, and it offers powerful contemplative tools for giving expression to the wisdom of our ripening lives. It is non-denominational, and we invite all participants to connect Age-ing to spiritual life. Older adults learn to shift into the role of an Elder with a new vision of growing older, a shifting that empowers the Elder to feel -- * I am turning life experience into wisdom.* I learn to harvest my life experience and to reframe it knowing that I cannot change the past but I can look at it from another perspective.* I complete and heal any unfinished issues in my life, thus enriching the present.* I work on removing the psycho-spiritual obstacles from the issue of Death and Dying; and I face my mortality.* I can develop a regenerative spirit. This inter-generational class open to all ages entwines journal writing exercises, text study, interactive and individual meditations, and group sharing. Our program lasts seven weeks and will be offered at two different times: A daytime option begins on March 15th at 11 am. An evening class option will be offered beginning April 19th at 7 pm. Both classes will take place at Temple Beth El of North Bergen -300 75th Street in North Bergen. The suggested donation for the class is only $36 for the entire series. Location: Temple Beth El of North Bergen 300 75th Street North Bergen, NJ. Contact: Rabbi Ilan Glazer (201) 869-9149 or office@templebethelofnorthbergen.org.
