 High Holidays Supplement 2011 

Dear Friends,

 

In preparation for the High Holidays, HudsonJewish is pleased to present this brief guide to upcoming community activities.

 

All local synagogues are holding services on Rosh HaShana (September 28-30) and Yom Kippur (October 7-8); for specific information about timing and policies, consult the Synagogue Directory page of the HudsonJewish website at www.HudsonJewish.org.

Most local synagogues are offering free admission to people who are new in the area; all have generous admissions policies to discreetly benefit those in need.  Consult the Synagogue Directory for contact information for the rabbis, cantors, and other Jewish spiritual leaders in the vicinity.

If you are interested to attend Congregation Mount Sinai of Jersey City Heights, please visit the synagogue's High Holidays website at www.Rosh2011.com.

In addition to High Holidays services, there are a number of upcoming events community events, detailed in the calendar below, that may be of interest.  These include:
  • This Sunday, September 18, 6-8PM:  Jewish community dinner at Sapthagiri Indian-Kosher-Vegetarian Restaurant on Newark Avenue in Jersey City (RSVP to:  Zhanna Potash, Zhanna@HudsonJewish.org).
  • Friday, September 23, 7-10PM:  Ishmael Khaldi, Israel's first Bedouin Muslim diplomat, to speak at United Synagogue of Hoboken.  Services and talk followed by dinner for people in their 20s and 30s sponsored by Next Dor Hoboken (dinner $5/person; RSVP to Becky Deitsch Skoff, (BDeitsch@gmail.com).
  • Sunday, September 25, 10AM - 5PM:  HudsonJewish and other Jewish organizations' booths at the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival, Washington Street in Hoboken 
  • Date TBD:  Families With Kids Jewish Play Date Group to meet at a park or other public place. For children up to 5 years old.  To be added to the list contact Michelle Levine, Michelle@HudsonJewish.org

Sunday, September 18, 6-8:00PM: HudsonJewish Community Dinner - Indian/Vegetarian/Kosher!  HudsonJewish is pleased to support the county's only Kosher-certified Indian/Vegetarian restaurant, Sapthagiri, located in the "Little India" section of Jersey City on Newark Avenue by Journal Square. Join us for an evening of good company and delectable Indian cuisine. RSVP to Zhanna Potash (Zhanna@HudsonJewish.org) so that we can get a headcount.

 

Location: Sapthagiri Restaurant, 804 Newark Avenue (entrance on Liberty Ave), Jersey City.  Easily accessible by PATH to Journal Square; parking available in an inexpensive lot on Newark Ave. 

  

Friday, September 23, 7-10PM: Services and Shabbat Dinner: Join USH for Friday night services as we welcome special guest Ishmael Khaldi, the first Bedouin Muslim to serve as a diplomat in Israel's Foreign Service. Mr. Khaldi is the former Israeli Consul General in San Francisco. He will speak following Shabbat evening services (which begin at 7pm) about Bedouins in Israel and why he serves as an Israeli diplomat when he is part of Israel's non-Jewish minority. The service will be followed by Shabbat dinner sponsored by Next Dor Hoboken, especially for people in their 20s and 30s, with more conversation with Mr. Khaldi. Saturday, September 24, 7-10PM:  Pre-Selichot Saturday Night at the Movies! Congregation B'nai Jacob presents Pre-Selichot Saturday Night at the Movies!  The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz is a 1974 Canadian comedy-drama film directed by Ted Kotcheff and starring Richard Dreyfuss. It is based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Mordecai Richler.  Hot popcorn and other refreshments. No charge. Donations always welcome.  Following a brief discussion of the array of ethical questions raised by the film led by Cantor Dubrow, a traditional brief Selichot service will be held in the Sanctuary introducing all the beautiful melodies of the High Holy Day season.  All are welcome.  Ample free parking.

Sunday, September 25, 2011, 9:00am - 5:00pm: HudsonJewish Table at Hoboken Arts & Music Festival. For the 4th year running, HudsonJewish will have a booth at the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival. Stop by to meet your Jewish neighbors and learn more about Jewish resources in our growing community.  Location: Somewhere on Washington Street, Hoboken, NJ.  (Likely by the corner of 1st Street, but we won't know until the event).  Additional booth volunteers (1-2 hour shifts) are very welcome -- it's a great way to meet people and learn more about the local Jewish community while enjoying the street fair.  Contact: Michelle Levine (Michelle@HudsonJewish.org).

Thursday, September 29, 3-4PM: Congregation B'nai Jacob and Temple Beth-El of Jersey City:  Tashlich-on-the Hudson. Congregation B'nai Jacob and Temple Beth-El, both of Jersey City, will celebrate Tashlich-on-the-Hudson together. Enjoy singing, dancing, as well as apples and honey as we cast our breadcrumb 'sins' into the Hudson. Kid-friendly event.

Volunteers Sought; Donations Appreciated

 

HudsonJewish is a 100% volunteer effort and relies on the community for support.  While donations are always appreciated, the most important thing we need is people to help with specific tasks.  In particular, if you have skills in publicity, website development, or events organizing, contact us at Info@HudsonJewish.org.   You will be joining a dedicated and capable group of volunteers to serve a growing community that depends on HudsonJewish for information and connection to other Jews in the vicinity.
