Dear Friends,

The mission of HudsonJewish is "to nurture and support Jewish religious, cultural and institutional life in Hudson County, New Jersey, which has been rediscovered in the early 21st century by a new wave of Jewish arrivals after decades of Jewish emigration."  Our motto is: "HudsonJewish:  Connecting Our Community."

If you are receiving this e-newsletter, it is because you are part of the local Jewish community--and HudsonJewish wants to know how best to help you connect with its other members.  To this end, we will soon be distributing a brief electronic survey about the activities and events you would like HudsonJewish to host.  We hope that you will take a minute or two to complete it.

This month, HudsonJewish will be hosting a fascinating event that underscores the importance of connecting with the general community in our area.  On Sunday, February 13 at 1PM, high school students from the Jersey City Public Schools will be presenting a video and panel discussion about their experience visiting Holocaust-era sites in Eastern and Central Europe.  Led by educator and administrator June Chang (a Korean-American), the students visited concentration camps, memorials, synagogues and other sites of Jewish interest on their two-week trip last year.  Most of the students are not Jewish--yet they have returned to Jersey City inspired to teach their peers and neighbors about their experience confronting the legacy of the Holocaust and genocide.  We hope that you will join us to hear their story and to support June Chang's efforts to bring another group of Jersey City Public Schools students to Europe this year.  There is no charge for the event, but an appeal will be made for your support of this important initiative.  The event will take place at United Synagogue of Hoboken.

In addition to the February 13 Holocaust studies event sponsored by HudsonJewish, other local Jewish organizations are sponsoring fascinating programs in February.  Please see below for more information.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter and find it helpful.

Sunday, February 13, 1:00pm - 3:00pm: Jersey City Public Schools Holocaust Studies Presentation. For the past several years, the Jersey City Public Schools system has sponsored a Holocaust studies program, which has included a trip by high school aged students to sites in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. Led by teacher and administrator June Chang (a Korean-American), the students, most of whom are not Jewish, gain exposure to Jews, Judaism and the Jewish experience in World War II. Join past program participants for a video presentation and panel discussion about what they learned, and how the program changed their lives. As past presentation attendees can attest, the students' video images and words provide a truly moving glimpse into how learning about the Holocaust changed their own lives. The students return from Europe as "point people" in their schools and neighborhoods about the Holocaust, intolerance and genocide.  There is no charge for the event, but an appeal will be made for your support of this important initiative.  Location: United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Avenue.  Contact: Raylie@HudsonJewish.org
