Ruth Messenger to Speak in Hoboken Oct. 16

On Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:30AM, during Shabbat services, Ruth Messinger, former Manhattan Borough President and president of the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), a faith-based international human rights organization that works to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease in the developing world, will speak at United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Avenue in Hoboken.  Ms. Messenger will lecture on "From Disaster to Development:  Jewish Responses to Global Crises."

After a 20-year career in public service in New York City, where she served for 12 years on the New York City Council and 8 as Manhattan Borough President, Ms. Messinger has devoted herself to Judaism's Tikkun Olam imperative, to pursue international justice and human rights.  Considered a national leader in the movement to end the genocide in Sudan, Ms. Messenger was among the leading anti-genocide, peace and human rights advocates called upon to advise President Obama and the new special envoy for Sudan, General J. Scott Gration, in March 2009.

Admission is free; RSVP by emailing office@hobokensynagogue.org.

As was announced in this space previously, Temple Beth El of North Bergen recently welcomed a new spiritual leader, Ilan Glazer, a Senior Rabbinical Student at ALEPH: The Alliance for Jewish Renewal.  Rabbi Glazer has also recently studied at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, the Conservative Yeshiva, and the Nava Tehila Bet Midrash in Jerusalem.  He has a B.A. in Talmud from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the City University of New York.  In addition, Rabbi Glazer has ordination as a Maggid (inspirational storyteller) and is an experienced Jewish environmental educator.  He has led Shabbat and High Holiday services at Temple Beth El of North Bergen many times.
