Free High Holidays Admissions
| | At least 3 local synagogues are offering free admission to High Holidays services this year, with a special invitation extended to newcomers to the area:
Congregation Mount Sinai of Jersey City Heights, 128 Sherman Avenue in Jersey City, telephone 201-222-3445. The synagogue is a short walk from downtown Hoboken and only a few blocks from the 9th Street Light Rail Elevator between Hoboken and Jersey City Heights. Ask for Rabbi Shlomo Marks.
Congregation Shaare Zedek, 5308 Palisade Avenue in West New York, telephone 201-867-6859. (Ideally located for anyone in the West New York, Union City, Guttenberg, or Weehawken vicinity). Ask for Dan Kaminsky.
Temple Emanu-el of Bayonne, 735 Kennedy Boulevard, Bayonne, telephone 201-436-4499. Ask for Rabbi Clifford Miller or for Debbie Moalem.
As of press time, these were the congregations that informed HudsonJewish that they would be opening their doors to all comers for free. Note that Chabad Lubavitch of Hoboken also has an open doors policy. (201-386-5222; ask for Rabbi Moshe Schapiro).
If you do attend High Holidays services at any of these congregations please remember that if you are able, a modest post-Holidays contribution is always appreciated.

Congregation B'nai Jacob of Jersey City to Host Holiday-related Events
| | Cantor Marsha Dubrow and Congregation B'nai Jacob are pleased to invite the entire community to three special (and free) events related to the High Holidays:
- "Saturday Night At The Movies" (Saturday, September 4, 7PM at the synagogue). The congregation will be showing a double feature, with two versions of "The Jazz Singer": Al Jolson's (1927) and Neil Diamond's (1970). The movies will be followed by Selichot services.
- "Tashlich on the Hudson" (Sunday, September 12, 2PM at the foot of Washington Street in Jersey City). Ceremonially toss your sins into the Hudson River in preparation for the High Holidays. Apples and honey, bread crumbs, and live music supplied!
- Neilah service and catered break-fast, (Saturday, September 18, 6PM at the synagogue).

Temple Beth El of North Bergen Welcomes New Spiritual Leader
| | Temple Beth El of North Bergen is delighted to welcome Ilan Glazer as its new spiritual leader. Ilan is a Senior Rabbinical Student at ALEPH: The Alliance for Jewish Renewal, and has also recently studied at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, the Conservative Yeshiva, and the Nava Tehila Bet Midrash in Jerusalem. He has a B.A. in Talmud from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the City University of New York.
Ilan has ordination as a Maggid (inspirational storyteller) and is an experienced Jewish environmental educator. He has led Shabbat and High Holiday services at Temple Beth El of North Bergen many times.

JFS of MetroWest Hosts "Living Successfully with a Mood Disorder"
| | Jewish Family Service (JFS) of MetroWest and the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) invite members of the community touched by depression or bipolar disorder to a free, four-part series, to be held on Tuesday evenings, October 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 6:45PM - 8:45PM at the offices of JFS of MetroWest, 256 Columbia Turnpike, Suite 105, in Florham Park.
The "Living Successfully" course helps participants learn the basics of mood disorders, available resources and assistance, tips for relationships and recovery, and how to build a Living Successfully plan. Participants report better daily functioning and improved perspective on their long-term mental wellness. Pre-registration is required by September 27 and is limited to 20 people.

Comprehensive "Introduction to Judaism" Class to be Held in Hoboken, 2010 - 2011
| | The New Jersey Rabbinical Assembly has announced that United Synagogue of Hoboken will be one of 3 locations for its annual "Introduction to Judaism" class, starting Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 7PM. (The other two locations are Fair Lawn and East Brunswick). The course will be of interest to anyone who wants to probe the depths of their Judaism, and serves as an educational basis for anyone considering conversion to Judaism.
Classes are held Wednesday evenings from 7:00PM - 9:30PM with 45 minutes of learning Hebrew from scratch, followed by a discussion of the topic for the week. Included in the price of the class are 7 Jewish books and a listing of online resources.
The Hoboken classes will be taught by United Synagogue of Hoboken Rabbi Robert Scheinberg. The course is oriented toward a wide variety of people including potential Jews by Choice and their spouses/significant others; non-Jews raising Jewish children; and born Jews who wish to learn more about their heritage. Sample topics include:
- Jewish Perspectives on God - Introduction to the Jewish Calendar - Three Dimensions of Jewish Identity: Behaving, Believing and Belonging - Judaism & Christianity: A Comparative Look - Shabbat: A Palace in Time - Kashrut - The Jewish Dietary Laws - Women and Judaism - The Four Streams of Contemporary Judaism - Jewish Perspectives on Conversion - Zionism and the Modern State

Weekly HudsonJewish Bike Ride
| | Each week, HudsonJewish sponsors a bike ride along the Hudson River waterfront, starting at the Korean War Veterans Memorial at the foot of Washington Street in Jersey City. Just bring your bike and a helmet!
Bike rides are Tuesday at 6:30PM

Kosher, Pasture-raised Meat Now Available in Hoboken
| | United Synagogue of Hoboken has announced a partnership to bring OU-certified kosher, pasture-raised chicken and other meat to the area.
Grow and Behold (www.GrowAndBehold.com) is delivering meat for pickup at United Synagogue of Hoboken. Deliveries are every second Tuesday. It is possible to place 1-time orders as well as standing orders. Visit the Grow & Behold website to place your order.

Temple Emanu-El's S'lichot services will follow the Installation of our 2010-2011 Officers & Board of Trustees, beginning with Havdallah at 8:10 PM. This year we welcome Dr. Charles M. Kurtzer, DPM, FACFAS, an award-winning synagogue leader from Livingston, NJ. He will speak to us about "The Potential of Small Congregations." Thursday, Sept 9th, 5:30 PM: United Synagogue of Hoboken Tashlich ceremony. Ceremony of casting away sins, followed by singing and dancing. Bring a picnic dinner if you'd like. Free and open to the public, this is a wonderful 'first taste' of the USH community for people who are not attending other High Holiday services here. Location: Pier A Park, Hoboken
Sunday, Sept 12th, 2-4 PM: B'nai Jacob's 3rd Annual Tashlich-on-the-Hudson. We will have the usual traditional Jewish New Year's apples and honey and other treats, as well as live music, along with the traditional ritual of collectively casting into the Hudson our sins and bad memories from the past year. Come join us! Location: Paulus Hook, just beyond the Korean War monument.

It's the first "My Jewish Neighborhood" event of the season: visit a sukkah in your neighborhood for a potluck dinner, dessert and the Havdalah ceremony for the end of Shabbat, from 5-7PM. Sunday, Sept 26th, 12 PM: Jewish Museum of New Jersey art exhibition opening reception. "The Many Faces of Yisrael," a group exhibition of paintings, drawings sculpture and photographs depicts the diversity of the Jewish people. Participating artists are Jahheal Massac (painter and sculptor), Mansa Mussa (photographer and collagist), and Phillip Deloatch (painter and sculptor). Exhibit runs from September 26 through November 14. Location: Congregation Ahavas Sholom, 145 Broadway, Newark. Free parking.

| On Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:30AM, Ruth Messinger, former Manhattan Borough President and president of the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), a faith-based international human rights organization that works to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease in the developing world, will speak at United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Avenue in Hoboken. Ms. Messenger will lecture on "From Disaster to Development: Jewish Responses to Global Crises."
After a 20-year career in public service in New York City, where she served for 12 years on the New York City Council and 8 as Manhattan Borough President, Ms. Messinger has devoted herself to Judaism's Tikkun Olam imperative, to pursue international justice and human rights. Considered a national leader in the movement to end the genocide in Sudan, Ms. Messenger was among the leading anti-genocide, peace and human rights advocates called upon to advise President Obama and the new special envoy for Sudan, General J. Scott Gration, in March 2009.

You will be joining a dedicated and capable group of volunteers to serve a growing community that depends on HudsonJewish for information and connection to other Jews in the vicinity.
