| HudsonJewish "Salon" Moves Outdoors in June! Wednesday, June 9, 7:00PM at Korean War Memorial in Downtown Jersey City | | |
The HudsonJewish "Salon" moves outdoors this month, and will meet on Wednesday, June 9, 7:00 PM in Peninsula Park by the Korean War Memorial at the south end of Washington Street in Jersey City. Shed your jacket, pack a brown-bag dinner, and bring a dessert to share with the group. Unlike prior Salons, there will be no agenda this time -- just an opportunity to share a warm spring evening by the waterfront with others in the community. Spotlight on the Community: Moishe House Hoboken

"Moishe House" is a worldwide network of residences/club houses for 20- and 30-somethings who enjoy community, food, drink and good times in a pluralistic Jewish environment. With locations from Beijing to Buenos Aires, Moishe House currently has houses in 18 U.S. cities including Hoboken.
Moishe House Hoboken holds two Friday night dinners per month, plus a variety of other events such as happy hours, book discussions with popular Jewish authors, hookah nights, camping trips and more. Programming is based on what participants want to do; to this end, Moishe House Hoboken has a planning committee of the three local Moishe House residents plus three 20-/30-something community leaders.

"Signs & Wonders": A Photography Exhibit at the Jewish Museum of New Jersey

The Jewish Museum of New Jersey is currently featuring an exhibition of Israeli-American artist Eliyahu Lotzar entitled "Signs & Wonders" which features images that illustrate the presence of G-d in nature. The Museum is open Sunday afternoons, 1-5PM and runs through June 6th. For more information consult the Museum's website at www.JewishMuseumNJ.org.

Here's $1,000 to Tell Your Kid to Take a Hike

Federation of Northern New Jersey, in
partnership with the Foundation for Jewish Camp, is offering $1,000
incentive camperships to
first-time campers at Jewish overnight camps.
Attending
an overnight Jewish camp is one of the most powerful ways to build
Jewish
identity and commitment in young people. At camp, Jewish values,
connection to Israel, and the culture of Judaism are incorporated into
every
aspect of daily activity in a warm, fun, and nurturing environment.
Eligibility: students
who will be enrolled in a
minimum three-week overnight camp run by a not-for-profit Jewish
organization are eligible. Only students who attend public or secular
private schools are eligible.
If a camper was previously enrolled in a Jewish overnight camp of less
than
three weeks or went to a non-Jewish camp, s/he is still eligible.

Posting events is the best way to avoid scheduling conflicts and broadcast your events (and existence) to the community. Dates/times/locations may change, so check the online calendar for updates. Wednesday, June 2nd, 7:30-9:30 PM: "A Taste of Judaism" course begins. This is a five-week class for Jews and non-Jews who seek a deeper understanding of Jewish tradition, values, and spirituality. Led by Rabbi Scheinberg. Classes will be held on June 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30.

Sunday, June 6th, 9:30-11:00 AM: Temple Emanu-el of Bayonne film series presents "Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg". The history of "The Goldbergs" -- and the massive appeal and influence of its Jewish American main character -- is explored in this fascinating documentary from filmmaker Aviva Kempner. Though she is not a household name today, Molly Goldberg -- the indelible creation of writer and performer Gertrude Berg -- was one of the most popular characters on radio and television from the 1930s to the '50s.

Sunday, June 6th, 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM: HudsonJewish Annual Leadership Forum. HudsonJewish will be hosting a leadership meeting of including clergy, synagogue leaders, and other Jewish community organization leaders. Thursday, June 10th, 7:00 PM: The monthly HudsonJewish Salon goes outdoors! Shed your jackets, grab a Brown-Bag dinner and a dessert to share with the group and meet us at the south end of Washington Street in Jersey City at the Korean War Memorial in Jersey City. No agenda other than enjoying a beautiful spring evening on the waterfront. Come and meet friends, neighbors and "newbies" in our neighborhood. (Note that while the Salon normally meets on Wednesdays, this month it is scheduled for a Thursday.)

Bring a kosher or vegetarian picnic dinner and join us at 6pm at Church Square Park (5th/Park); we'll bring the challah and grape juice and Shabbat songs. Designed for families with infants and toddlers, though open to everyone in the community. No RSVP necessary. (In case of rain, program will be cancelled.) Thursday, June 24th, 7:30-10:00 PM: Spiritual Salon. Looking for a conversation that doesn't have to do with reality TV? Want something a bit deeper? Fancy yourself an intellectual? Well, join our Spiritual Salon and come on over for a mental throw down. Topic to be determined soon but in the past we have had guest thinkers and cerebral tinkerers, rabbinic types, and people with secular gripes, all of whom facilitate a great conversation and time.
Friday, June 25th, 6:30-10:00 PM: Friday Night Live! Join Congregation B'nai Jacob for their Shabbat dinner/Friday Night Live services. We're having another big party to recognize our 50th year! Wine, nosh and schmooze from 6:30 to 7:30, musical services from 7:30 to 8:15, followed by dinner.

Save the Date! Hudson County Synagogue Architectural Tour, Sunday October 17th
| | Save the Date! On Sunday, October 17, HudsonJewish will be sponsoring an architectural tour of local landmark synagogues. Buses will carry participants to the synagogues, where members will act as docents, describing the history, culture, and architectural features of each one. This event is sure to appeal to all interests, as well as provide a guide to anyone considering joining a local synagogue. Time and price TBD. More information to be posted on the HudsonJewish.org website.

HudsonJewish is a 100% volunteer effort and relies on the community for support. While donations are always appreciated (see, Our Donors), the most important thing we need is people to help with specific tasks. In particular, if you have skills in publicity or website development, contact us at info@HudsonJewish.org. You will be joining a dedicated and capable group of volunteers to serve a growing community that depends on HudsonJewish for information and connection to other Jews in the vicinity.
