Dear Friends,
May is full of Jewish events in Hudson County, from various synagogues' Lag B'Omer and Shavuot festivities, to lectures and movies, to events for children. We hope that you enjoy this newsletter and find it helpful.

Jewish Social/Intellectual Salon: Wednesday, May 12, 7:30PM at the C.A.S.E. Museum in Downtown Jersey City

Our next Salon takes place Wednesday, April 14. The HudsonJewish Salon takes place on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM at the C.A.S.E. Museum, 80 Grand Street (corner of Washington) in downtown Jersey City. Previous Salon topics have included Jewish Food and Memory, Jewish Humor, and Israel's relationship with American Jewry. For more information contact HudsonJewish Trustee Burt Gitlin: Burt@HudsonJewish.org. A small donation of refreshments is always appreciated but not required.

"Signs & Wonders": A Photography Exhibit at the Jewish Museum of New Jersey

The Jewish Museum of New Jersey is currently featuring an exhibition of Israeli-American artist Eliyahu Lotzar entitled "Signs & Wonders" which features images that illustrate the presence of G-d in nature. The Museum is open Sunday afternoons, 1-5PM and runs through June 6th. For more information consult the Museum's website at www.JewishMuseumNJ.org.

Sunday, May 2nd, 3:30-5:30 PM: Lag B'Omer BBQ at Congregation Sons of Israel by Journal Square. Including Moon Bounce, carnival games, delicious food and drinks, marshmallow toasting and a raffle. Friday, May 7th, 6:30-9:00PM: United Synagogue of Hoboken is delighted to welcome Naomi Freedman, of the Israeli Masorti (Conservative Judaism) movement, who will speak on "Religious pluralism in Israel: Why it matters and how we can help". Join us for light refreshments at 6:30, Shabbat services at 7, and the talk at about 7:50. Followed by Shabbat dinner for young adults. Location: United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Avenue.
Sunday, May 9th, 2:30-5:00PM: The Actors Shakespeare Company of New Jersey City University comes to Congregation B'nai Jacob to present "Measure for Measure: A Staged Reading". A reception with the actors and director will follow. Location: Congregation B'nai Jacob, 176 West Side Avenue, Jersey City.
Tuesday, May 11th, 12:45PM: Lunch and Learn at the CASE Museum. Topic: Shavuot. Kosher Chinese lunch $5. Location: 80 Grand Street in Jersey City. RSVP: 973-943-2306.
Wednesday, May 12th, 7:30PM: Downtown Jersey City's monthly Jewish Salon at the C.A.S.E. Museum. Join the conversation!
Friday, May 14th, 6:00-8:00PM: Shabbat in the Park. Bring a kosher or vegetarian picnic dinner, and join us in Church Square Park (5th and Park, Hoboken). We'll bring the challah, grape juice, and Shabbat songs. Designed for families with babies and toddlers, but open to everyone! No RSVP necessary. Canceled in case of rain.
Saturday, May 15th, 8:00-11:00PM: All Points Borscht: An Evening of Comedy and Music, to benefit Temple Beth-El, the Reform synagogue of Jersey City. Starring nationally renowned comedians Brad Zimmerman, Stone & Stone, and hosted by Phil Rivo. Brad Zimmerman is a regular at top casinos and comedy clubs and has opened for such comedians as Brad Garrett, George Carlin, Joan Rivers and Ray Romano. Stone & Stone, 27 year old twins, have performed at comedy clubs and theaters throughout the country and on NBC's Last Comic Standing. Snacks & adult beverages available. Tickets: $20 in advance (at 201-333-4229 or www.betheljc.org), $22 at the door. Parking is available at the Bank of America across the street. Sunday, May 16th: Hoboken scavenger hunt/picnic. Join Hoboken USY/Kadima (6-12 grades) for a scavenger hunt around Hoboken, culminating in a picnic. Meet at United Synagogue of Hoboken. Time TBA. Contact: sbrbabysitter@gmail.com
Sunday, May 16th: Kaplan Preschool 10th anniversary celebration/carnival. Join us on the street for a full day of activities and musical performances. Consult the USH website for more details: www.HobokenSynagogue.org. Location: United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Ave.

Tuesday, May 18th, 7:30-9:30PM: Temple Emanu-el of Bayonne's "Torah & Blintzes" Shavuot celebration. Temple Emanu-El presents "The Elwyn James Blattner Shavuot Celebration." Join us for an evening of "Torah & Blintzes" -- learning and noshing together". Our guest teacher for the evening: Cantor Marshall Wise will discuss "Music of the Jews." | Save the Date! Hudson County Synagogue Tour, October 17th | | Save the Date! On Sunday, October 17, HudsonJewish will be sponsoring a tour of numerous local synagogues. Buses will carry participants to the synagogues, where members will act as docents, describing the history, culture, and architectural features of each one. This event is sure to appeal to all interests, as well as provide a guide to anyone considering joining a local shul. Time and price TBD.

Volunteers Sought; Donations Appreciated

HudsonJewish is a 100% volunteer effort and relies on the community for support. While donations are always appreciated (see, Our Donors), the most important thing we need is people to help with specific tasks. In particular, if you have skills in publicity or website development, contact us at info@HudsonJewish.org. You will be joining a dedicated and capable group of volunteers to serve a growing community that depends on HudsonJewish for information and connection to other Jews in the vicinity.
